AB - We investigated 15 divergent very large fruited tomato populations originating from Serbia. This tomato population have extra-large fruits (sometimes up to 1.000 g), and are often grown in home gardens and used for fresh salad, from reasons that they are very tasty and have extra short shelf life.
We have been testing their plant characteristics such as: average fruit weight (g), uniformity of fruit size, weight of largest fruit (g), fruit shape, color of ripe fruit, fasciations of flowers and fruits, fruit firmness and content of vitamin C (mg%).
There was a significant diversity of some fruit characteristics between the investigated tomato populations: average fruits weight ranged from 315 g to 690 g, weight of largest fruit from 510 g to 1.035 g, fruit shape was very different (flat, round, oval and of heart or pear shape), fruit color was also different (green, light green, orange, red and purple), with expressed flower and fruit fasciation, with soft fruits and very high vitamin C content.
The dendrogram of phenotypic differences was formed. It was based on fruit characteristics (fruit weight, weight of largest fruit, and color of ripe fruit), and it consisted of four clusters. The first cluster consisted of related genotypes of extra large fruits, with extreme weight of largest fruits, and of purple fruit color. On the other hand, the other clusters were characterized by populations of moderately large fruits with light green fruit color.

AB - Serbian local tomato market prefers big fruit weight 200 gr., and long shelf life. Slow ripening and long shelf-life of tomato fruits are traits controlled by several ripening inhibitor genes (nor-non ripening, nr- never ripe, rin-ripening inhibitor, alc-alcobaca) and other. In our tomato breeding programs the rin mutations are used to enhance the shelf-life of tomato fruits in commercial practice. Fruits of these genotypes ripe slowly, have a shelf life of 2 -3 weeks and at the same time have relatively good colour, firmness and taste. Maternal parental lines had been of rin/rin, and paternal parental lines of rin(+)/rin(+) genetic constitutions The best practical results had the combinations of rin/rin(+) genotype. The results are new tomato hybrids: Nada F-1, Sampion F-1, Sef F-1, Sidra F-1 and Rebus F-1 of rin/rin(+) genotype. In these F-1 hybrids shelf life was from 18 to 30 days. This period is satisfactory for market needs and is much better than in commercial grown hybrids Balkan F-1 and Marco F-1 (5 and 8 days, respectively). These hybrids have sp(+) plant (except, Rebus F-1 have: sp plant), very firm fruits with deep red color, average fruit weight from abot 190 to more than 220 g., and good deseases resistance (VFN or VTm-22). Maturity is from early (Sef F-1, Rebus F-1), medium early (Nada F-1, Sidra F-1) and medium late (Sampion F-1). It was observed the decrease of content of total acids and lycopene in heterozygote rin/rin(+) F-1 tomato hybrids, but that was not statistically significant. There was no statistical difference between the hybrids and lines regarding the chemical compound except for the lycopene content. Maternal components of hybrids (rin/rin genotypes) had low level of lycopene (from 6.0 to 6.8 mg/100 g FM) comparing to all hybrids where their level has been significantly higher (from 13.2 to 22.4 mg /100 g FM).

AB - Proizvodnja povrća predstavlja najintenzivniju granu biljne proizvodnje sa
visokom akumulativnošću i ekonomskim efektima. Posebno se dobit iz ove
prozvodnje u velikoj meri povećava gajenjem biljaka u zaštićenim
prostorima.
godina zahteva primenu savremene tehnologije i više nego ikada zahteva
predstavlja i prvu monografiju o paradajzu u našoj zemlji. Ovoj konstataciji
Pored
Naučno i stručno
paradajz.

AB - In order to find a superdominant gene for yield, a collection of 350 samples with genes mutations and different expression in different phases of growth and development: fruit size, leaf shape, plant architecture, number of fruits, etc., has been studied (through multi-year research). Current seed production at the Institute for Vegetable Crops in Smederevska Palanka includes 26 hybrids and two in acceptation process, of different purposes and characteristics. The most common mutation genes in tomato selection at the Institute are: sp (self-pruning) inbuilt in determinant hybrids (Balkan F1, Marko F1, Rebus F1) and varieties (Narvik SPF, SP-109, Adonis), u (uniform ripening) - Lido F1, Atina F1, Danubius F1, rin (ripening inhibitor)- Nada F1, Šampion F1, Sef F1, Sidra F1, Rebus F1, j (jointless) - Narvik, Adonis, SP-109, c (potato leaf) - Mi-13, Enigma F1, Rebus F1, Ph -2 (Phytophtora infestans resistance) - Luna F1, Zlatni jubilej F1, Sef F1. Quality of tomato fruits is defined by two groups of genes which determinate the organoleptic traits and nutrition composition. Organoleptic quality includes taste and smell, colour and texture of fruits established in variety differences, nutritive regime of plants, maturity phase and yield. Little is known about gene regulation, responsible for variation of these traits.

The most common mutation genes in tomato selection at the Institute are: sp (self-pruning) inbuilt in determinant hybrids (Balkan F1, Marko F1, Rebus F1) and varieties (Narvik SPF, SP-109, Adonis), u (uniform ripening) - Lido F1, Atina F1, Danubius F1, rin (ripening inhibitor)- Nada F1, Šampion F1, Sef F1, Sidra F1, Rebus F1, j (jointless) - Narvik, Adonis, SP-109, c (potato leaf) - Mi-13, Enigma F1, Rebus F1, Ph -2 (Phytophtora infestans resistance) - Luna F1, Zlatni jubilej F1, Sef F1. Quality of tomato fruits is defined by two groups of genes which determinate the organoleptic traits and nutrition composition. Organoleptic quality includes taste and smell, colour and texture of fruits established in variety differences, nutritive regime of plants, maturity phase and yield.

AB - Slow ripening and a long shelf life of tomato fruits are traits controlled by several ripening inhibitor genes (nor - non ripening, nr - never ripe, rin - ripening inhibitor, alc - alcobaca). The combinations of a rin/rin+ genotype showed the best results in our tomato breeding programmes. Fruits of these genotypes ripe slowly, have a 2-3-week shelf life and at the same time have a relatively good colour, firmness and taste. The tomato hybrids, Nada F1, Šampion F1, Trezor F1, Sidra F1 and Rebus F1 resulted from these breeding programmes. The rin mutations were used to enhance the shelf-life of tomato fruits in commercial practice, with insignificant effects on the chemical content (decrease of total acidity and lycopene content in fruits) in F1 tomato hybrids with the rin/rin+ genetic constitutions. Male parental lines were of the rin+/rin+ genetic constitution. Storage of fruits (shelf-life) was the best in homozygous rin/rin parental lines Home-5 and Home-3 (from 118 to 125 days). In heterozygous rin/rin+ hybrids Nada F1, Šampion F1, Trezor F1, Sidra F1 and Rebus F1 shelf life was from 18 to 30 days. This period is satisfactory for market needs and is much better than in commercial hybrids Balkan F1 and Marco F1 (5 and 8 days, respectively). There are now statistical differences between hybrids and lines in chemical components except in the lycopene content. The male parental lines had a low lycopene content (6.0 and 6.8 mg) in comparison with all hybrids (up to 13.2 mg). .
Smanjenje sadržaja ukupnih kiselina i likopena u heterozigotnim rin/rin+ F1 hibridima paradajza nije statistički značajno. .

AB - Tomato fruit firmness is a polygenetic trait and depends on firmness components pericarp thickness, firmness of epidermis and firmness of flash. The accumulation of favourable traits ratio for each component (towards the increase of expression) the fruit firmness can be increased. This paper deals with aspects of increasing fruit firmness by increasing firmness of epidermis and thickness of pericarp. By using genotypes with rin (ripening inhibitor) gene, we were able to accomplish great firmness of fruits, especially firmness of flash. The expression of these traits cause the asynchronization of maturing process so the fruits do not over mature or soften. Genetic effects have been evaluated by researching the average values of fruit firmness in six diallel parent lines (D-150, S-49, S-35, H-52, Kg-z and SP-109) and progeny (P1, P2, F1, F2, BC1 and BC2) by applying additive dominant model with three and six parameters (Mather and Jinks, 1982). Mean values of fruit firmness for parents and progeny were significantly different. Firmness of fruits is a trait influenced first of all by additive gene since they were found in all researched combinations. Epystatic gene effect was important in inheriting process for all three two-gene interactions. The stabile duplicate type of epystsase was found, which in this case reduces the unfavourable effects of dominant genes of parents with soft fruits. .
U nasleđivanju veliku ulogu igraju epistatični genski efekti sva tri tipa dvogenskih interakcija i utvrđena je pojava duplikatnog tipa epistaze u stabilnom obliku. .

AB - Wilts of tomato caused by Verticillium dahliae and Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici are devastating diseases in major tomato-growing regions in Serbia. One of the best solutions for reducing losses is to grow resistant varieties. Five commercial tomato hybrids (Luna F-1, MarkoF(1), Nada F-1, Zlatni jubilej F-1, Balkan F-1) and four lines (S-31, D-150, P-2/02, P-3/02) were assessed for resistance to these pathogens. Plants tested for resistance to V dahliae were root-dip inoculated at the stage of two-four leaves. Testing the resistance of tomato plants at the two true leaf stages uses two isolates of E oxysporum L sp. lycopersici, race 1 and 2. Lines P-2/02, S-31 and hybrid Marko F-1 showed high resistance to V. dahliae. Hybrids Luna F-1 and Nada F-1 as well as lines P-3/02 and D-150 were partially resistant, while hybrids Zlatni jubilej F-1 and Balkan F-1 were susceptible. All tested tomato genotypes were more or less susceptible to both isolates of F. oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici.

AB - Slow ripening and long shelf life of tomato fruits are traits controlled by several ripening inhibitor genes (nor - non-ripening, nr - never ripe, rin - ripening inhibitor, ale - alcobaca). In our tomato breeding programs, the best results had the combination of rin/rin(+) genotype. Fruits of these genotypes ripen slowly, have a shelf life of 2-3 weeks and at the same time have relatively good color, firmness and taste. The results are tomato hybrids Nada F-1 and Sampion F-1. Hybrid Nada F-1 is indeterminate, with large habitus and a good amount of foliage. Fruits are very firm, round to flattened globe, smooth, without the green shoulder and average weight is 200-220 g. Unripe fruits are dark green, while ripened fruits are deep red. This hybrid is resistant to Verticillitan albo-atrum, Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici and Meloidogyne spp. Hybrid Sampion F-1 is indeterminate, with medium habitat and a good amount of foliage. Fruits are very firm, round and smooth, without the green shoulder and ribs, and average weight is 180-200 g. Unripe fruits are light green, while ripened fruits are deep red. This hybrid is resistant to Verticillium albo-atrum, Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici and Meloidogyne spp.

AB - Nowadays tomato selection includes firmness and shelf-life of fruits. Tomato selection for these traits has to include selection for pericarp thickness, firmness of epidermis and firmness of flesh. Fruit firmness is a polygenic trait and depends on firmness components. Fruit firmness can be increased by accumulating favourable traits of each component. This paper deals with aspects of increasing fruit firmness by increasing firmness of the epidermis and thickness of the pericarp. By using genotypes with the rin (ripening inhibitor) gene, we were able to accomplish high fruit firmness, especially firmness of flesh. The expression of these traits causes asynchronization of the maturing process so the fruits do not over-mature or soften. Genetic effects have been evaluated by researching the average values of fruit firmness in six diallel parent lines (D-150, S-49, S-35, H-52, Kg-z and SP-109) and progeny (P-1, P-2, F-1, F-2, BC1, and BC2) by applying an additive dominant model with three and six parameters. Mean values of fruit firmness for parents and progeny were significantly different. Firmness of fruits was influenced primarily by additive genes. Dominant gene effects appeared in certain cross combinations. Epistatic gene effects were important in inheritance for all three two-gene interactions. The stable duplicate type of epistasis was found, which in this case reduces the unfavourable effects of dominant parent genes.

AB - In order to determinate the content of vitamins in mature grains of afila pea lines, we in the Centre for Vegetable Crops started a three years research during 1993-1995. We researched total content of beta-carotene, vitamin A1 and B1 in 8 afila lines and 4 parental cultivars. The average content of the researched vitamins in pea grains showed that the content of vitamins in the researched genotypes was the same as previously determined by other authors, which leads to a conclusion that leaflessness does not influence the decrease of content of the mentioned vitamins in mature pea grains.

AB - The aim of this research was to determine genetic values for the number and weight of fruits in F1 and F2 generation of diallely crossed pepper genotypes, and to evaluate the effects of applying the pedigree and bulk breeding method for producing F3 hybrid populations. Hybrid populations were formed by crossing divergent genotypes belonging to different cultivars of species Capsicum annuum L. The research of parent lines lasted for three years, experiments with F1 generation for two years, while the analysis of results for F3 hybrid population has been done regarding the data from one year experiment. The heterosis effect in F1 generation for all researched traits and in all crossing combinations was very low. Genetic analysis of F2 generation showed that all researched traits were inherited with partial domination. In F3 generation, hybrid populations formed by using the pedigree method of selection had traits which are more valuable for further breeding than the hybrid population formed by using modified bulk method.

AB - Ecological and environmental diversity in Serbia and Montenegro, and various orographic and climate characteristics make this area an extraordinary floristic resource (Stevanovic et al., 1995), with great diversity of plant species, and among them vegetables. For some vegetable species this area is primary (Brassicae, lettuce, carrot, leek, beet) and for some secondary (garlic) centre of domestication. About 30 vegetable species are being grown in large areas, intensively in monoculture, which is a rather small number (only 20%). The potential for growing and consumption is 150 species (Grlic, 1980). Most of them are wild, uncultivated plants, which contain much more minerals and vitamins than cultivated plants (Fritz, 1989). Therefore, the potential of diversification of vegetable crops in Serbia and Montenegro is high. Possible sources for diversification are wild, uncultivated vegetable crops with their high nutritive value, minimally, or non consumed at all; forgotten vegetable species, more popular for nutrition in past; exotic vegetable species gown in other geographic areas; new-created cultivars of well-known vegetable species improved by breeding or genetic engineering (now the most common way); growing or use of new vegetable species.

AB - Lycopene production in tomato fruits depends upon K ion concentration in cytoplasm and vacuoles, but also upon other limiting factors, such as temperature, watering regime and subjecting to direct sun light influence, in cohesion with other factors. In order to research whether lycopene and beta-carotene production depend upon mineral macro-nutrient, we used industrial tomato cv. Narvik SPF as a material. The content of lycopene regarding the fertilizer formulation was from 33.69 mg/kg in control to 56.92 mg/kg in plants treated with increased content of potassium. Fertilizers with increased content of phosphorus increased the content of lycopene, comparing to control, but not significantly. On the other hand, this treatment provoked greater content of beta-carotene, which could be the cause of shortened fruit maturing process (fruits have been picked at the same day). Plants with the lowest content of beta-carotene have been treated with increased potassium (2.933 mg/g), which could be the cause of this shortened maturing process influenced by potassium ions, i.e. the most of beta-carotenes transform into lycopene.

AB - Late blight (P. infestans Mont. de Bary) is one of the most common diseases of tomato in Serbia and it causes great economical losses. Control of this pathogen with fungicides is not always efficient and satisfactory. The solution is in the growing of less sensitive i.e. resistant cultivars and hybrids of tomato. The programme of breeding of tomato for resistance to late blight in Serbia started in 1980. Tomato genotypes, bearers of Ph-2 gene of resistance to late blight and sensitive genotypes which have good yield and quality were hybridized. New lines and hybrids of tomato were more resistant than their sensitive parents. Testing of lines and F-1 hybrids showed the intermediate type of heredity to late blight. During 2003, in order to test the resistance of these new lines, cultivars and hybrids to P. infestans, we inoculated the plants artificially, in greenhouse conditions. We researched 7 lines and 16 cultivars and tomato hybrids, and tested twenty, six weeks old plants from each genotype. Plants were inoculated with suspension of fungi spores in concentration of 10(5)sporangia/mL. The inoculums were prepared from fungi culture 15 days old, grown on rye and agar on 18 degrees C. After inoculation, plants spent 48 hours on 18 degrees C, in condition of great humidity. The resistance, i.e. sensibility, depending on surface covered with necrotic spots has been evaluated 10 days after inoculation. The results, presented on a scale from I to VI, showed that the tested tomato genotypes could not be considered resistant. Hybrids Zlatni Jubilej F-1 and Luna F-1, cultivar Gruzanski Zlatni and line P3 are in category - very tolerant (I). Middle sensitive (III) were Nada F-1 and Jasenicki Jabucar, while other genotypes were very sensitive. The most sensitive (VI) were cultivars Narvik and Adonis.

abstract = "Late blight (P. infestans Mont. de Bary) is one of the most common diseases of tomato in Serbia and it causes great economical losses. AB - We investigated the shape of tomato fruit by evaluating the ratio between the horizontal and vertical diameter in diallele crossings of 6 parental genotypes (D-150, S-49, S-35 and H-52, Kg-z and SP-109). The diallele and their progeny (F1, F2, BC1 and BC2), were used to investigate the mode of inheritance by generation mean analysis (Mather and Jinks, 1982). Additive gene effects were the most significant in affecting the inheriting the fruit shape. Most frequently expressed epistatic effects were the additive x dominance interaction, followed by additive x additive gene effects. The duplicate type of epistasis was relatively stable.

AB - Samples of 25 entirely different autochthonous tomato varieties and local tomato populations originated from the area of the former Yugoslavia, were investigated. The content of beta-carotene and vitamin C of the fruits in mature stage, was studied. In order to determine the genetic divergence between populations, the hierarchical cluster analysis was applied for forming dendrogram and cluster groups. The results showed that there was a great difference in the content of vitamin C from 18.3 mg% in the local population Azanjski zuti to 34.7mg% in the very old population Beogradsko sunce. The differences were even greater in beta-carotene content, from 0.75 mg% in the populations Volovsko srce and Domaci skopski up to the extraordinary 7.66 mg% in the local population Paradajz tresnja of orange fruit colour. We also recorded the presence of a high degree of genetic divergence in different tomato genotypes. The dendrogram of phenotypic distances for both traits was composed of 5 clusters. This highly significant material could be successfully used in tomato breeding programmes to select genotypes for high content of both vitamins.

AB - The genetic analysis of 5 tomato hybrids (Danubius F-1, Luna F-1, Lido F-1, Balkan F-1 and Mi-10 F-1) was made. We produced their F-1. F-2, BC1 and BC2 generations and analysed their yield (on the first three flower branches) as well as some of the yield components of tomato fruits (mean fruit weight, mean fruit weight on the first flower branch, fruit length, fruit width, and number of locules). In order to estimate the gene effects, we applied the additive-dominance mode with three and six parameters. Epistatic gene effects were estimated by applying the six-parameter mode (Mather and Jinks 1982). As for yield and yield components, there were significant differences between the mean values of parents and their progeny. On the basis of the investigated genetic parameters, the obtained results suggested that the additive and dominance gene effects prevailed in the yield and yield components (Danubius F-1, Luna F-1, Lido F-1, Mi-10 F-1), whereas epistatic gene effects were excluded. As for the hybrid Balkan Fl, we recorded significant gene effects, both the additive and the dominance ones in the yield inheritance: additive x additive and dominance x dominance (with the negative sign). The estimated values of the epistatic gene effects were the most prominent in inheriting the feature average fruit weight on the first flower branch - additive x dominance gene effects. They represented the most frequent type of the interallele interaction recorded in the investigated hybrids.

AB - By using the knowledge of the genetic constitution and the characteristics of the available tomato lines for selection, there were created several dozens of hybrid combinations characterised by semi-determinate habit, with large fruits and early maturing. These hybrids were tested in preliminary and comparative trials with the hybrids Balkan F-1, Balca F-1, Zar F-1, and some others as standard varieties. These tomato hybrids were grown earlier but they are grown even today in the early production, for the market in green houses and in the open field. The hybrid Marco F-1 was the best of all. its yield was 25 t/ha in the plastic-house (the same as in the standard), up to 32 t/ha in the open field (5 % more than in the standard). This hybrid was a few days later than Balkan, with the fruits weighting 200 grains (fruits were approximately 60 % heavier than in the standard). It possess the genetic V, F and Tm resistance.

AB - In this paper we present the data on the disease intensity of the tomato plants grown in glass and plastic-houses, and in the open field. The infection was caused by the following viruses: Tomato mosaic virus (ToMV), Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV), Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV), Alfalfa mosaic virus (AMV), Potato virus X (PVX), Potato virus Y (PVY), Tomato black ring virus (TBRV), Tomato ringspot virus (ToRSV), Tomato aspermy virus (TAV), and Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV). These viruses represented most frequent tomato pathogens in Serbia. According to the obtained results, it could be concluded that 92.94% of the tested tomato plants grown in glass and plastic-houses, and 89.82% grown in the open field were infected by one of the above viruses. Most of the plant samples were infected by two or more viruses. The most frequent viruses - tomato pathogens in Serbia were ToMV, PVY and TMV.

AB - We performed the genetic analysis of 6 tomato hybrids originating from 6 inbred lines (D-150, S-49, S-35, H-52, Kg-z and SP-109). We produced their descendant generation F1, F2, BC1 and BC 2 In order to estimate the genetic effects, applied the additive-dominance model with three and six parameters. The epistatic effects were evaluated by using 6-parameter model (Mather and Jinks, 1982). There were significant differences between the mean values of the parents and their descendants concerning the number of fruits per flower branch. According to the results obtained from the investigated genetic parameters, the additive gene effects were prevailing for the feature of inheritance of the number of fruits per plant. We recorded the significant effects of these genes in all the investigated combinations. The estimated values of the epistatic gene effects additive x additive genes represented the only type of interallel interaction, which was found in the investigated crosses.

The estimated values of the epistatic gene effects additive x additive genes represented the only type of interallel interaction, which was found in the investigated crosses.",

AB - In Yugoslavia, of the total tomato production (250 000 tons on about 22 000 ha) 15% are processed, production for local market is 40% and production for home consumption is 45%. Tomato production for processing is located on the north of state, in Vojvodina and in the basins of river Sava and Morava (Pannonian region), in continental favorable climatic conditions (long warm period). About 30% oh the tomato processing production in this region is organized by the so-called combinats, on surface (average for each of 20-50 ha) irrigated and machine harvested, with high yield. In the other parts of Yugoslavia production is organized by farmers, on the small plots (0.2 -0.3 ha) in cooperation with processing industry. In the reason of that, there are grown different cultivars, and the raw material for processing is very unequal. Cultivars grown 10 years before has been foreign processing cultivars (UC 105, Super California, Toco 70, Intermech, Slumac, Arizona, Red Ball and etc.) and also Yugoslav cultivars (SP-109 and Narvik SPF). Now, from the reason of had economic situation, farmers grow 90% Yugoslav cultivars. These cultivars are used for direct sowing or transplanting, and farmers for fresh market apply culivars of large fruits. The main processing product is concentrate in three types: double (28-30% of dry matter), than single and triple. The second product of processing is juice, than ketchup and peeled tomatoes. Perspectives of tomato production for processing in Yugoslavia are not good. In some next years not can be expected increasing of production. However, combinats and farmers have not the money for advanced the productions. Also processing industry has needs, but has not the possibility to investment in better equipment, to enlarge productions and especially for obtained better quality of processing products.

AB - A 2 × 3 test-cross analysis was done in order to estimate the influence of genes on the yield of cucumbers. Two female lines of indeterminate growth (21/3 and PMS) were crossed with three monoecious lines of determinate growth (M-24/4, M-24/5 and M-24/6) used as testers. Field trial was done according to a randomized block system in two replications using six F 1 hybrids and their parents. Analysis of combining abilities was done by the Singh and Choudhary method (1976). The tested genotypes were significantly different in yield. Additive influence of genes controlled the expression of yield. The most important value of general combining ability (GCA) was noted with the PMS line. Significant values of specific combining ability (SCA) were not found in the tested hybrids.

AB - We analyzed five commercial hybrids obtained from eight inbred lines which were used as parental genotypes. In this way, we selected their F1, F2, BC1, and BC2 generations by applying the additive - dominant mode with three and six parameters for genetic effect estimation. The effect of dual - genetic epistasis was estimated by using 6 - parameter -mode (Mather and Jinks, 1982). We analyzed the parents and their descendants concerning their yield. There was a significant presence of dual genetic epistasis in Balkan hybrid (dominant x dominant, additive x additive) and in Lido hybrid (additive x dominant, dominant x dominant). By testing the adequacy of the 3 - parameter - mode, we excluded the epistatic effects on the yield inheritance in Mi - 10 and Luna hybrids. Both hybrids showed that the dominant gene effect was more prominent than the additive one.

AB - The interdependence of 8 morphological characteristics and biochemical parameters, all important for tomato fruit quality, has been investigated. These characteristics and parameters are: fruit weight, number of locules, fruit firmness, number of cracks, dry matter content, total sugar content, total acid content, and vitamin C content.. The research was done on 12 lines and their 30 F, hybrids obtained from the partial diallel cross (Singh and Chaudhary, 1976).A very strong positive correlation (correlation coefficient r>0.75) was observed between fruit weight and number of locules. A negative correlation was found between fruit weight and dry matter contents. A strong positive correlation (r>0.50) was observed between fruit firmness and total sugar content, while a negative correlation was found between fruit weight and the total sugar content, between tomato fruit firmness and the total acid content and, finally, between the number of cracks and sugar content. A moderate positive correlation (r>0.30) was found between the number of cracks per fruit and total acid content, as well as between fruit firmness and dry matter content. A negative correlation was found between fruit weight and total acid content.
