AB - In this paper it was analyzed the genetic and phenotypic variability of the fertile and sterile spikelets number per spike in ten cultivars of winter wheat (KG-56, Srbijanka, Lepenica, Oplenka, Ljubičevka, Jugoslavija, Zagrepčanka, Nizija, Slavonija and Baranjka), which are originated from different selection centers. Experiment was performed by random block system in five repetitions on the experimental field of Small Grains Research Centre of Kragujevac in the two years. It was performed an analysis of the examined characteristics of 50 plants in the full maturity stage. Significant differences among cultivars, production years and their interaction were determined. The highest average value of number of fertile spikelets per spike had a cultivar Ljubičevka (20.7), and the lowest cultivar Lepenica (18.4). Variability of this trait was similar in both years of research (V=7.3%; V=7.8%, respectively). The average number of sterile spikelets per spike was higher in the first (1.12) than in the second year (0.96). The lowest average sterile spikelets per spike established at cultivars Ljubičevka and Jugoslavija (0.5), and the highest at cultivars Zagrepčanka and Nizija (1.6). By the analysis of components of phenotypic variance it was established that in expression of fertile spikelets per spike years had the greatest impact (35.05%), but something smaller proportion belonged to the cultivars (20.62%). However, genotypes had the largest share in the expression of number of sterile spikelets per spike (57.45 %), which means that spike sterility mostly depends to genetic factors.

AB - In diallel cross excluding reciprocals of four divergent wheat cultivars (Ana Morava, Gruža, Beograđanka and Pobeda) was derived F2 hybrids. Those four cultivars and F2 hybrids were investigated to estimate the mode of inheritance, gene effects and combining abilities for number of kernels per spike in wheat plants. By analysis was established different mode of inheritance for number of kernels per spike (intermediate, partial dominance, dominance and overdominance). Analysis of variance of combining abilities indicated significant differences for this trait. Obtained results showed that this trait determined by additive and non-additive gene effects. Significant high value of specific combining ability (SCG) in F2 hybrids indicated preponderance of non-additive gene effect. The highest value of general combining ability (GCA) expressed cultivar Ana Morava while the best specific combination was cross of Ana Morava x Beograđanka for number of kernels per spike.

AB - The bread-making quality was investigated in seven Kg winter wheat cultivars KG-56, Toplica, Takovčanka, Studenica, Lazarica, KG-100 and Matica that were grown at Kragujevac at 16 variants of fertilization and control variant without fertilization. Investigation was performed at a long-term stationary field trial. Analysis of sedimentation value, gluten content and thousandgrain weight were carried out. Grain quality of wheat significantly increased under NPK application. Sedimentation value and gluten content increased under N application and depended on analyzed cultivars. The NP and NK application are influenced positively on grain quality. The highest values of sedimentation in average for all cultivars were found at N2 (53 ml) and N2P1K1 (52 ml) variants, and wet gluten content at N2P2 (44.32%) and N2 (42.51%) variants. Enhancer cultivars Toplica and Kg-56 were shown the best quality of all. In all investigated cultivars the lowest values of quality parameters were found at N1P1 and N1P2 variants. Combination NP nutrients had the best positive effect on grain quality. The highest thousand-grain weight was obtained at N2 (36.20 g) and P2 (35.62 g) variants. In average for all variants Matica cultivar had the highest thousand grain weight (36.55 g) of all.

AB - The dynamics of development and influence of meteorological conditions on the appearance of cereal leaf beetle (CLB) were investigated during two years, which differed according to temperature regime. Cumulative values of average daily temperature were registered 7, 14, 21 and 28 days before appearance of adult of CLB. The cumulative temperature was the most similar about 14th day (108,40 C 1st-year, and 106,20 C 2nd-year), while identical values of cumulative temperate (102,00 C) was registered on 13 days before stop of hibernation and can use as basic indicator in prognostication of appearance of CLB in spring. The period from beginning of oviposition to the appearance of larva varied between 11 to 19 days during two experimental years and sum temperature was from 203,30 C to 232,60 C. Period of larva development was 17- 19 days and cumulative temperatures in that period were between 258,9 and 283,30 C. The period from cocoon to appearance of first adult of new generation was between 13 and 15 days at the sum temperature from 245,30 C to 247,20 C.

AB - The protein content and sedimentation volume in grain of different maturity stages (milk, early dough, full dough, and full physiological) in winter wheat varieties (KG-56, Srbijanka, Lepenica, Ljubičevka, Oplenka, Jugoslavija, Nizija, Slavonija, Zagrepčanka and Baranjka) were investigated. The obtained results have shown that grain quality depended of maturity stage and variety. The mean values for protein content and sedimentation volume of the varieties exhibited variability the cultivars under all the four maturity stages. The highest protein content was in grain of milky stage (11.56 %), but the lowest in grain of early dough stage (10.64 %). The sedimentation volume was the highest in grain of early dough stage (40.0 ml), and the lowest in grain of milky stage (32.5 ml). The analyzed varieties differed and depended of grain maturity stage. The highest grain protein content had Jugoslavija in milky stage (12.82 %), but the highest value of sedimentation were found at KG-56 at full physiological stage (46 ml) and Slavonija variety at full dough stage (46.0 ml). These results indicated that grain protein content of wheat was the highest at milky stage, but its quality was the best at dough stage.

AB - Barley is one of the five major crop species of the world which widely use for stock feed, human food, malting, brewing and distilling. Barley provided familiar source of animal feed and food as well bear which is popular and traditional drink. This plant species represents low protein crop and it is very important for malt quality and brewing development. The region with low rainfall and low soil fertility combined with local crop rotational requirements provides conditions to produce optimum malting quality in different barley cultivars. A wide range of variables, including abiotic and biotic stresses can affect quality components. While each users of barley require consistent raw material, economic price and specific quality, the barley breeders need to create new barley cultivars. Initial breeding and selection objectives were focused on agronomic trait as grain morphology yield and disease resistance. Crop management play important role in barley spreading and yield improvement. Breeders need to develop cultivars for markets which demand clean bright grain with low moisture, better disease resistance, and high quality parameters. Significant consideration when breeding must be given barley cultivar ability to achieve quality in different environmental conditions.

abstract = "Barley is one of the five major crop species of the world which widely use for stock feed, human food, malting, brewing and distilling. AB - Creation of new genotypes can be realized by using conventional plant breeding and recently by using new biotechnology. Classical breeding technology represents long-term process of genotype creation. New biotechnological methods make possible to overcome this problem and develop transgenic plants for specific utilization. Application of new technology makes it possible to transfer gene to the crop plants by genetic manipulations encoding the desirable traits and developing new genetically modified plants. In this review paper data on research of genetically modified organisms, development of new technology in plant breeding and possibility of its application and intellectual property rights protection in plant breeding will be presented.

AB - Fifty wheat genotypes from different selection centers of Yugoslavia and world were analysed. The experiment for this investigation was performed in a randomized block design in three replications on the experimental field of the Center for Small Grains, Kragujevac and during two year which differed in climate conditions. The 60 plants of each cultivar were analyzed. The protein content was analysed by Kjeldahl method, and sedimentation value by Zeleny method. The results were calculated by analysis of variance, and components of variance (genetic, interaction, environment, phenotypic) were calculated from analysis of variance. Heritability was calculated as a ratio of genetic/phenotypic variance. High significant differences for grain protein content and sedimentation value at all investigated cultivars were established. High values for grain protein content from 14.4 % in Jugoslavija cultivar to 18.1 % in Hart cv., and sedimentation value from 25.5 ml in Brock cv. and Florida cv. to 70.5 ml in Bankut 1205 cv. were established. The broad-sense heritability of grain protein content was low (h2=33.2%), and of sedimentation value was high (h2=90.0%). The highest percentage of the whole phenotypic variability, was assigned to the cultivar/year interaction (58.54 %), while only 16.46 % were assigned to genetic factors. Higher impact of genotype (81.5 %) than environment (17.9 %) for the sedimentation value was found by phenotypic variance analysis.
