Interpreting the Interaction of Genotype with Environmental Factors in Barley Using Partial Least Squares Regression Model

AB  - Genotype by environment interaction (GEI) is a complex problem that complicates the barley selection and breeding process. The knowledge of the relationship between cereal phenology and climatic data is important for understanding GEI and the physiological pathways responsible for the interaction effect. The grain yield of twenty winter barley genotypes in six environments was observed. Factors influencing the variability were analyzed using a linear mixed model. The partial least squares regression (PLSR) model was applied to determine the most relevant environmental variables in certain stages of development that explained GEI effects. Biplot with environmental variables explained 43.7% of the GEI. The barley was generally the most sensitive to the environmental conditions (relative humidity, maximum temperature and its variation, sun hours, and precipitation) during the anthesis and filling stage (May) which caused GEI. Temperature variables did not show significance only in the vegetative phase. Different genotypes responded differently to environmental factors. Genotypes NS-525, NS-589, and J-103 were highlighted as widely adaptable, and Zajeˇcar was a suitable and reliable location for yield testing. The GEI information presented in this paper can be useful in traditional plant breeding and future breeding programs through molecular research of crop developmental genes and examination of physiological processes in two-row barley.

AB  - This research was conducted with some spike traits of twenty

Phenolics and Sesquiterpene Lactones Profile of Red and Green Lettuce: Combined Effect of Cultivar, Microbiological Fertiliser and Season

AB  - The main goal of our study was to find an optimal combination of tested factors to achieve
lettuce rich in bioactive compounds sustaining its pleasant taste. We examined three red and three
green cultivars in a greenhouse using two microbiological fertilisers (EM Aktiv and Vital Tricho), and
their combination. Plants were grown in three consecutive growing seasons (autumn, winter, and
spring). Lactones accumulated in autumn, whereas phenolics’ concentration rose during winter. Red cultivars showed higher phenolics and lactone content, where chicoric acid and luteolin-7-glucoside were the most abundant in the ‘Gaugin’ winter trial. Lactucopicrin was the predominant lactone among tested cultivars with the highest value in the red cultivar ‘Carmesi’. Solely applicated, the fertiliser EM Aktiv and Vital Tricho led to significantly higher phenolic acid and dihydrolactucopicrin
content, while combined, there were notably increased levels of all detected lactones. Application
of single fertilisers had no effect on flavonoid content, while the combination even reduced it. A
sensory analysis showed a negative correlation between overall taste and total sesquiterpene lactones,lactucopicrin, caffeoylmalic, and chlorogenic acid, indicating a less bitter taste with decreasing content of these compounds. Our findings indicate that the cultivar, fertiliser, and growing season jointly affected all of the tested parameters, highlighting the differences in the application of EM Aktiv, Vital Tricho, and their combination.

AB  - Interakcija genotipa i spoljašnje sredine (GEI) je kompleksan problem koji
komplikuje proces selekcije i oplemenjivanja ratarskih kultura te je stoga važno
utvrditi njenu značajnost i iskoristiti njene pozitivne karakteristike. U radu je analiziran
prinos zrna dvadeset genotipova ozimog dvoredog ječma u šest spoljašnjih
sredina (dve vegetacione sezone na tri lokaliteta). Za analizu interakcije korišćen je
linearni mešoviti model i model glavnih efekata i višestruke interakcije (AMMI) sa
AMMI1 biplot prikazom. Utvrđena je visoka statistička značajnost interakcije dok je
AMMI1 model objasnio 40.1% varijacije interakcije. Stabilnost genotipova određena
je parametrima stabilnosti AMMI modela (AMMI1, AMMI2 i ASV) i utvrđena je
značajna korelacija rangova genotipova između njih. Prinos nije pokazao značajnu
korelaciju ni sa jednim parametrom. Na osnovu Genotip Selekcionog Indeksa
(GSI), genotipovi J-82, J-103, NS-589 i J-176 su izdvojeni kao široko adaptabilni
i superiorni u pogledu prinosa i stabilnosti što je potvrđeno i biplot prikazom.
Genotipovi koji su na osnovu AMMI1 procenjenih vrednosti prinosa preporučeni
za svaki od lokaliteta su najprinosniji NS-525, NS-593, J-176, NS-589, J-103 i J-82.
Razlike u interakcijskom efektu između godina (Zemun Polje i Zaječar) kao i slab
diskriminatorski efekat (Kragujevac) ne izdvajaju ni jedan lokalitet kao pogodnu
test lokaciju. Winner pristupom, sve ispitivane sredine možemo smatrati kao jednu
mega-sredinu što ukazuje da u ogledu dominiraju nepredvidive interakcije što specifične
adaptacije čini manje značajnim. AMMI1 model je pouzdan i informativan u
interpretaciji interakcije i ništa se značajno neće promeniti ako se druga interakcijska
komponenta naknadno uključi. Izdvojene su neke inbred linije ječma što ovaj model
čini pogodnim u selekciji perspektivnih genotipova.

growing seasons in three localities). A linear mixed model and additive main effects
and multiplicative interaction (AMMI) model with AMMI1 biplot display were
used for interaction analysis. High statistical significance GEI was determined and
AMMI1 model was explain 47% of interaction. The stability of the genotypes was
estimated by different AMMI stability parameters (AMMI1, AMMI2 and ASV) and
a significant correlation was established between them. Grain yield and stability were
not related. Genotypes J-82, J-103, NS-589 and J-176 were selected as superior and
wide adaptability using Genotype Selection Index (GSI). They highlight as stable and
high yielding which was agreement with results of biplot analysis. On based AMMI1
estimates of grain yield, the genotypes recommended in each of the localities were the
most yielding NS-525, NS-593, J-176, NS-589, J-103and J-82. The difference in the
interaction effect by year (Zemun Polje and Zaječar) and weak discriminating effect
(Kragujevac) does not sepatare any suitable test location. By winner approach, all the
examined environments can be considered as one mega-environment, which indicates
that unpredictable interactions dominate in this research, due to which specific
adaptations were not of high importance. AMMI1 model is reliable and informative
in the interpretation of the GEI which indicates that essentially nothing happens when
the second interaction axis is subsequently included. Some inbred lines of barley have
stood out, which makes this model suitable for the selection of perspective genotypes.

AB  - U radu je ispitano 20 genotipova ozimog dvoredog ječma u
dvogodišnjem periodu (2008/09 i 2009/10) na tri lokaliteta (Kragujevac,
Zemun Polje i Zaječar). Analiziran je prinos zrna i dve komponente
prinosa: broj zrna po klasu i masa 1000 zrna. Primenom mešovitog
modela utvrđena je visoka značajnost (p<0,01) efekta genotipa i
interakcije genotipa i spoljašnje sredine, dok je efekat sredine statistički
značajan (p<0,05). Interakcija je analizirana primenom AMMI-1 modela.
Na osnovu biplota izdvojeni su široko adaptabilni genotipovi koji imaju
stabilnost i iznad prosečne vrednosti ispitivane osobine. Širokom
adaptabilnošću za prinos zrna isticao se genotip J-176, a za broj zrna po
klasu genotip NS-595. Genotip NS-565 bio je superioran u masi 1000
zrna. Na osnovu razlike u interakcijskom efektu sredina i njihovoj
stabilnosti izdvojeni su i lokaliteti pogodni za ispitivanje osobina. Ni
jedan lokalitet nije se izdvojio kao pogodan za ispitivanje prinosa i broja
zrna po klasu dok je Zaječar bio pogodan za ispitivanje mase 1000 zrna.

AB  - The principal sesquiterpene lactones (lactucin, lactucopicrin, and its dihydro forms), known as
contributors to bitter taste, were measured in green and red coloured lettuce using Ultra-performance
liquid chromatography. Six lettuce cultivars (‘Kiribati’, ‘Murai’, ‘Aquino’, ‘Gaugin’, ‘Aleppo’
and ‘Carmesi’) were grown in a greenhouse experiment using microbiological fertilisers (EM Aktiv,
Vital Tricho, and their combination) during three successive growing seasons (autumn, winter, and
spring). The major sesquiterpene lactone was lactucopicrin with the highest level found in cultivar
‘Carmesi’ (0.65 mg/g dry weight) in autumn with the combination of fertilisers. The concentrations
of lactucin, dihydrolactucin and dihydrolactucopicrin ranged from 0.001-0.085, 0.003-0.015, and
0.001-0.056 mg/g dry weight, respectively, and were not found in all lettuce samples. Generally,
red cultivars showed higher content of lactones compared to green. Application of Vital Tricho
and the combination of fertilisers led to an increased level of lactucopicrin, in some cultivars, in the
range of 77-800% compared to unfertilised plants. Higher levels of lactucopicrin were found in the
autumn trial compared to spring and winter. The present study suggests that genotype, fertilisers
and season jointly affected the quantity of sesquiterpene lactones with emphasis on Vital Tricho,
and/or the combination of fertilisers.

AB  - У књизи су обрађена питања везана за
ботаничку припадност, биолошке особине, порекло, привредни
значај, однос према условима успевања и агротехнику пет биљних
врста из породице Poaceae које припадају групи самониклих
вишегодишњих високих трава. Откривајући њихове повољне
биолошке особине и могућност коришћења у различитим
индустријским гранама, затим у исхрани домаћих живориња и за
спремање хране, применом савремених метода селекције научници
су створили велики број генотипова који се могу гајити у различитим
агореколошким условима.
Проучавајући однос описаних пет врста високих трава према
агроеколошким условима и поредећи их са условима
пољопривредних подручја Србије ове биљке се успешно могу гајити
у нашој земљи. Увођење у систем редовне биљне производње
представља велику шансу за пољопривредна подручја чија земљишта
су мање повољних физичких и хемијских особина. Описане високе
траве могу се гајити, како на најплоднијим, тако и на маргиналним
земљиштима, неподесним за ратарско-повртарску и воћарско-
виноградарску производњу. Увођењем у производњу ових
вишегодишњих биљака, уз повећана улагања у години заснивања, а
значајно мања у годинама коришћења, могла би се искористити
необрађена пољопривредна земљишта, али и привести намени
већина непољопривредних, деградираних површина и депосола.
Годишњим приносом биомасе високих трава значајно би се
подмириле различите индустријске гране, као и потребе домаћих
животиња у волуминозној и концентрованој храни. Главни
производи најновијих генотипова појединих врста (интерспецијес
хибриди) интересантни су као сировина у прехрамбеној и
фармацеутској индустрији.
Најважнији начин коришћења биомасе ових трава је у
производњи гасовитих течних и чврстих биогорива. Заменом
фосилних горива коришћењем биогорива постижу се значајни ефекти. Наша земља, која велике количине фосилних горива мора да
увезе, смањила би зависност од увоза. Са еколошког становишта
значајно је истаћи да се сагоревањем биогорива у атмосферу емитују
значајно мање количине штетних гасова, што ублажава пораст
температуре услед ефекта стакленика. Свих пет врста високих трава
обрађених у монографији, могле би се гајити као енергетски усеви.
Појединачним поређењем односа сваке од описаних високих
трава према агроеколошким условима са особинама наших
пољопривредних предела могла би се извршити рејонизација на
територији Републике, како од равничарских до брдско-планинских
подручја, тако и од влажнијих, до ариднијих предела. За сваку врсту
детаљно је описана технологија производње и складиштења
сировине до поступка даље прераде.
Климатски и земљишни услови наше земље повољни су за
гајење описаних високих трава и велика су шанса за мале фармере
који би, уз стандардну пољопривредну механизацију и веће учешће
ручног рада, омогужили потпуније ангажовање свих чланова
домаћинства. Уз мало већа улагања у години заснивања, али и у
примарну прераду главног и секундарних производа, фармер је у
могућности да оствари велику добит гајењем ових, мало познатих
биљака, које успевају и на сиромашнијим и необрађиваним
земљиштима.
Монографија је написана лаким стилом тако да може
послужити као уџбеник студентима будућим пољопривредним
стручњацима, али и као добар извор корисних информација свим
садашњим и будућим произвођачима, ових мало познатих биљака
великих производних могућности.

AB  - Lettuce is a worldwide grown leafy vegetable rich in phytochemicals which are essential in human diet. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of genotype, microbiological fertilisers and season on the rosette fresh weight and components of antioxidant activity. Six cultivars (green ‘Kiribati’, ‘Aleppo’, ‘Aquino’ and red ‘Murai’, ‘Carmesi’, ‘Gaugin’) were grown in a greenhouse experiment during three consecutive seasons (autumn, winter and spring) with application of microbiological fertilisers (EM Aktiv, Vital Tricho and their combination). Green cultivars showed higher fresh weight than red in spring and winter. Green cultivar ‘Aleppo’ showed the highest fresh weight in control during spring. Microbiological fertilisers led to increased fresh weight in autumn. Mainly, red cultivars showed higher quality parameters compared to green (total antioxidant capacity, total phenolic content, total carotenoids and POD activity). Red cultivar ‘Carmesi’ showed the highest total antioxidant capacity, total carotenoids, and total phenolic content in winter with combination of fertilisers, Vital Tricho, and in control. In spring, ‘Carmesi’ and ‘Gaugin’ showed the highest POD activity with Vital Tricho, and combination of fertilisers. The present study suggested that genotype, fertilisers and season jointly influenced quantity and quality parameters with emphasis on Vital Tricho, and/or combination of fertilisers.

abstract = "Lettuce is a worldwide grown leafy vegetable rich in phytochemicals which are essential in human diet. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of genotype, microbiological fertilisers and season on the rosette fresh weight and components of antioxidant activity. Six cultivars (green ‘Kiribati’, ‘Aleppo’, ‘Aquino’ and red ‘Murai’, ‘Carmesi’, ‘Gaugin’) were grown in a greenhouse experiment during three consecutive seasons (autumn, winter and spring) with application of microbiological fertilisers (EM Aktiv, Vital Tricho and their combination). Green cultivars showed higher fresh weight than red in spring and winter. Green cultivar ‘Aleppo’ showed the highest fresh weight in control during spring. Microbiological fertilisers led to increased fresh weight in autumn. Mainly, red cultivars showed higher quality parameters compared to green (total antioxidant capacity, total phenolic content, total carotenoids and POD activity). Red cultivar ‘Carmesi’ showed the highest total antioxidant capacity, total carotenoids, and total phenolic content in winter with combination of fertilisers, Vital Tricho, and in control. In spring, ‘Carmesi’ and ‘Gaugin’ showed the highest POD activity with Vital Tricho, and combination of fertilisers. The present study suggested that genotype, fertilisers and season jointly influenced quantity and quality parameters with emphasis on Vital Tricho, and/or combination of fertilisers.",

Variation in morphological and chemical traits in red and yellow mini watermelon

AB  - Watermelon is an annual vegetable crop from Cucurbitaceae family. Five mini watermelon
cultivars (red-fleshed ′Faerie′ F1, ′Golden crown′ F1, ′Bonanza′ F1 and yellowfleshed
′Sureness′ F1, ′Yellow baby′ F1) were grown in open field experiment from May to
July 2018. Plants were grown on a fertile soil, covered with black mulch film, on a distance
75x120 cm. During vegetation period regular agricultural practices were applied
(fertirrigation, weeding and preventive protection against diseases and pests). Fruits were
harvested after 60 days from planting. The aim of this study was to examine morphological
traits of five cultivars in full physiological maturity. Fruit weight ranged between 1.57-2.65
kg with the highest value in cultivar ′Sureness′. Number of fruits ranged from 20 (′Yellow
baby′, ′Sureness′) to 35 (′Faerie′). Rind thickness ranged between 5.22-11.91 mm with the
highest value in ′Yellow baby′. Total soluble solids ranged from 9.5-10.95 °Brix and randman
between 37-49%. Among all cultivars, red-fleshed ′Bonanza′ showed the highest randman and
total soluble solids (49% and 10.95 °Brix, respectively). Opposite to that, the lowest total
soluble solids showed yellow-fleshed cultivars ′Sureness′ and ′Yellow baby′. Generally,
yellow cultivars showed higher fruit weight and rind thickness, whereas red cultivars showed
higher number of fruits per plant, total soluble solids and randman. The present study outlines
that ′Bonanza′ and ′Faerie′ showed the highest quality (soluble solids content) among tested
varieties.

AB  - Trogodišnji makroogledi su postavljeni i izvedeni na području istočnog Srema (selo Surduk, opština Stara Pazova). Materijal istraživanja bilo je pet genotipova kukuruza zubana. U proizvodnji je primenjena standardna tehnologija proizvodnje, a predusev u sve tri godine bio je krompir. Kao kontrola poslužila je sorta. Dobijeni rezultati pokazali su da su genotipovi ispoljili značajna variranja morfoloških i proizvodnih osobina u izmenjenom vodnom režimu po godinama istraživanja. Najtolerantniji na sušu bili su rani hibridi FAO grupe 300, dok je klasična sorta ispoljila najmanju tolerantnost. U sve tri godine količine i
raspored padavina tokom vegetacionog perioda bili su manji od uslovno-optimalnih vrednosti za oko 48,4% u prvoj, za 36,5% u drugoj i za 50% u trećoj godini. Mesečni raspored padavina u 2016. godini bio je najpovoljniji, a najnepovoljniji u 2017. godini.
AB  - Three-year macro experiments were set and performed in the region of East Srem (Surduk village, municipality of Stara Pazova). Investigation material were five genotypes of dent maize, four single cross hybrids and one red grain variety (population). They were produced applying standard production technology, and the preceding crop in all three years was potato. The variety served as the control. Obtained results showed that, under an altered water regime, by years of the investigation, genotypes demonstrated significant variations of morphological and production properties. The most tolerant to drought were hybrids
belonging to FAO Group 300, while the classic variety exhibited the lowest tolerance. In all three years the quantity and distribution of precipitation during the vegetation period were lower than conditionally-optimal values by approximately 48,4% in the first, by 36,5% in the second, and by 50% in the third year. The monthly distribution of precipitation was most favorable in 2016, and most unfavorable in 2017.
