AB  - U ovom radu su ispitivana dva metoda analize stabilnosti kod 23
genotipa dinje gajenih tokom osam vegetacionih sezona na lokalitetu
Smederevska Palanka (ogledno polje Instituta za povrtarstvo). Analiza je
vršena AMMI metodom i BLUP metodom, koje se zasnivaju na analizi
interacije genotip x spoljna sredina (G×E). Najvažniji cilj rada je bio da
se odrede genotipovi dinje koji se karakterišu stabilnošću bez obzira na
uslove spoljašnje sredine. Ogledi su sprovođeni u periodu od 2014. do
2021. godine. Ispitivana osobina je bila masa ploda. Utvrđeno je da se
genotipovi, čija je prosečna masa ploda ispod ukupnog proseka,
karakterišu manje varijabilnim vrednostima mase ploda u odnosu na
genotipove koji su prinosniji. Kao najstabilniji genotipovi, bez obzira na
vodni režim u toku cvetanja i zametanja plodova izdvojili su se G3 i G16
(AMMI analiza) i G7, G14 i G20 (BLUP analiza).
AB  - In this paper, in 23 melon genotypes grown during eight growing
seasons at the Smederevska Palanka location (the open field of the
Institute of Vegetables), two methods of stability analysis were examined.
The analysis was performed using the AMMI method, and BLUP
method, which are based on genotype x environment (G×E) interaction
analysis. The most important goal of this paper was to determine the
melon genotypes that are characterized by stability regardless of the
conditions of the environment. The trials were conducted in the period
from 2014 to 2021. The examined trait was fruit weight. It was
determined that genotypes whose average fruit weight is below the
overall average are characterized by less variable fruit weight values
compared to genotypes that are more productive. G3 and G16 (AMMI
analysis), and G7, G14, and G20 (BLUP analysis) stood out as the most
stable genotypes regardless of the water regime during the flowering and
fruit set.

AB  - U radu je analizirana stabilnost osobine visina biljke 20 divergentnih
genotipova plavog patlidžana koji su deo kolekcije Instituta za povrtarstvo
Smederevska Palanka. Poljski mikroogledi su izvedeni na tri lokaliteta (Smederevska Palanka, Kusadak i Vranovo). Analiza varijanse AMMI
modela pokazala je da postoje značajne razlike između genotipova,
lokaliteta, kao i njihovih interakcija (G×E) za visinu biljke. Od ukupne
sume kvadrata, 91,6% variranja odnosio se na efekat genotipa dok se svega
4,11% variranja može pripisati efektu lokaliteta. Rezultati dobijeni u ovom istraživanju ukazuju da je 5 proučavanih genotipova pokazalo stabilnost
ove osobine na različitim lokalitetima. Na osnovu ASV vrednosti za visinu
biljke, zaključuje se da je najveća stabilnost utvrđena na lokalitetu Vranovo koji je po rangu na prvom mestu i sa koeficijentom AMMI stabilnosti 2,16.
AB  - In the experiment the stability of the trait plant height, for 20 divergent
eggplant genotypes from the GenBank of Institute for Vegetable crops Smederevska Palanka was analyzed. Field microtrials were carried out at three locations (Smederevska Palanka, Kusadak and Vranovo). The
analysis of variance of the AMMI model showed significant differences between genotypes, localities and their interactions (G×E) for plant height.
From the total sum of squares, 91.6% of the variation was related to the
genotype effect, while only 4.11% of the variation can be attributed to the
locality effect. The results obtained in this research indicate that 5 studied
genotypes showed the stability of this trait in different localities. Based on
the ASV value for plant height, it is concluded that the highest stability was
determined at the Vranovo location with an AMMI stability coefficient of
2.16.

AB  - Evaluacija genetičkih resursa plavog patlidžana (Solanum melongena L.) sa
različitih geografskih područja primenom molekularnih markera (RAPD) je od
velikog značaja u procesu oplemenjivanja. Ukupno 90 polimorfnih amplifikovanih
proizvoda dobijeno je od 10 dekamernih RAPD prajmera, korišćenih za analizu
genetičkog diverziteta 20 genotipova plavog patlidžana (16 lokalnih i 4 genotipova
stranog porekla). Najviši polimorfizam je konstatovan prilikom korišćenja OPAF-
16 prajmera (70,83%). Broj detektovanih amplifikovanih fragmenata je bio od 13
(OPF-04) do 24 (OPAF-16), dok je prosečan broj fragmenata po prajmeru iznosio
17,2. Dužine amplifikovanih fragmenata su bile u rasponu od 400 do 9000 bp.
Vrednost Jaccard-ovog koeficijenta genetičke distance bila je od 0,095 do 0,35, a
dendrogram konstruisan metodom UPGMA pokazao da se 16 lokalnih i 4 stranih
genotipova grupisalo se u devet grupa (klastera). Populacije K1, K8/1, K19, K22,
K25 i K38 predstavljaju genotipove koji su se odvojile od ostalih i formirali su
pojedinačne klastere. Najniža vrednost izračunate genetičke distance iznosila je
0,095 između domaćih genotipova K13 i K12, koji su i sa morfološke strane pokazali
sličnost u pogledu oblika i boje. S druge strane, najveća vrednost genetičke
distance izračunata je između stranih genotipova K19 i K25(0,35), K19 i K34 (0,34)
i K19 i K38 (0,34). Genetski različiti genotipovi identifikovani korišćenjem RAPD
markera mogu biti potencijalni početni genetički materijal za ukrštanje sa drugim
genotipovima radi dobijanja novih i poboljšanih sorti patlidžana.
AB  - Evaluation of genetic resources of eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) from
different geographical areas using molecular markers (RAPD) is of great importance
in the breeding process. A total of 90 polymorphic amplified products
were obtained from 10 decameric RAPD primers, used to analyze the genetic
diversity of 20 genotypes of eggplant (16 local and 4 genotypes of foreign origin).
The highest polymorphism was determined using the OPAF-16 primer (70.83%).
The number of detected bands ranged from 13 (OPF-04) to 24 (OPAF-16), while
the average number of bands per primer was 17.2. The lengths of the amplified
fragments ranged from 400 to 9000 bp. The value of the Jaccard’s genetic distance
coefficient ranged from 0.095 to 0.35, and the dendrogram constructed using the
UPGMA method showed that 16 local and 4 foreign genotypes were grouped into
nine groups (clusters). Populations K1, K8/1, K19, K22, K25 and K38 represent
genotypes that separated from the others and formed single clusters. The lowest
value of the calculated genetic distance was 0.095 between domestic genotypes
K13 and K12, which also showed morphological similarity in terms of shape and
color. On the other hand, the highest value of genetic distance was calculated
between foreign genotypes K19 and K25 (0.35), K19 and K34 (0.34) and K19 and
K38 (0.34). Genetically distinct genotypes identified using RAPD markers could
be potential starting genetic material for crossing with other genotypes to obtain
new and improved eggplant varieties.

AB  - U ovom preglednom radu prvo su opisane klasične metode mutageneze
i mehanizam nastanka mutacija, a zatim su nabrojane molekularne tehnike
u mutacionom oplemenjivanju: 1. inserciona mutagneza, 2. transformacije, 3. editovanje i 4. TILLING. Najveća pažnja posvećena je TILLING tehnici kroz prikaz svake od njehih etapa. Molekularne tehnike omogućuju unos
gena za poželjne osobine u genom i unapređuju klasičnu selekciju u
mutacionim populacijama kroz analizu ciljanih mesta na genomu. Ove
prednosti molekularnih tehnika reafirmišu mutaciono oplemenjivanje
povrća i drugih grupa biljaka.
AB  - In this review paper, the classical methods of mutagenesis and the mechanism of mutations are first described, and then the molecular
techniques in mutation breeding are listed: 1. insertional mutagenesis, 2.
transformations, 3. editing and 4. TILLING. The greatest attention is paid
to the TILLING technique through the presentation of each of its stages. Molecular techniques enable the introduction of genes for desirable traits
into the genome and improve classical selection in mutational populations
through the analysis of targeted sites on the genome. These advantages of molecular techniques reaffirm the mutational breeding of vegetables and other plant groups.

Analizirane su sledeće morfološkeosobine: prosečna masa korena, prosečna dužina, prečnik vrata i prečniksredine korena. Hemijskom analizom određena je suva materija, ukupniminerali, ukupni šećeri i sadržaj vode. Ispitivane osobine odabranihgenotipova poređene su sa standardnom sortom Podravski srednje dugi.

The following morphologicalcharacteristics were analyzed: average root mass, average length,diameter of the neck and diameter of the middle of the root. Dry matter,total minerals, total sugar and water content were determined by chemicalanalysis. The tested properties of the selected genotypes were comparedwith the standard Podravski medium-long variety.

Assessment of eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) 1 genotypes and selection of parameters for better yield

AB  - One of the goals in eggplant breeding (Solanum melongena L.) is higher yield. The research included 20 different genotypes that are part of the collection of the Institute for Vegetable Crops Smederevska Palanka. 16 genotypes originated from Serbia, 2 from the Netherlands, 1 from Italy and 1 from Israel. The experiment was conducted at locations Vranovo (44°36’6,35”N, 20°59’55.47”E, altitude 87 m) using a randomized complete block design in three replications. Yield parameters (earliness, plant height/cm, number of fruits per plant, fruit weight/g, fruit length and width/cm, fruit yield per genotype/kg) were examined to study the traits relations and to effects on eggplant yield. Number of fruits per plant had positive and significant correlation with yield (r=0.685**). Also results showed positive correlation between each of: plant height to fruit length (r=0.812**), plant height to fruit weight (r=0.147), fruit width to fruit weight (r=0.523*). This characteristics had direct or indirect positive effect on yield so it can be taken as selection criteria to increase final yield of eggplant. Because there is genetic variability between tested genotypes, progress in breeding will depends on this variation. Earliness had negative correlation with yield (r=-0.044) and with all others parameters.

Examination of seed quality parameters of three pepper varieties in a five-year period (Capsicum annuum L.)

AB  - Sweet pepper (Capsicum annum L.) is considered one of the most popular vegetables in the
world. During five consecutive years (2017-2021) the most important indicators of seed
quality (seed germination, energy, seed purity and moisture) and health safety were analyzed
in three varieties of peppers (Capsicum annuum L.): Palanačko čudo, Župska rana and Duga
bela. During the research, very high values of all important parameters of seed quality were
determined. The average determined seed purity was 98.6 % with a variation over the years
of examination from 99.10% to 99.9%. Seed germination varied in the range of 73% to 94%,
while the average germination was 86%. Germination energy was in the range of 61% to
88%. Seed moisture data showed that it was in the tolerance range of 6.3% to 7.4% per test
year, with an average value of 6.9%. Alternaria spp and Fusarium spp were detected in
minimal percent or no detection on variety of Palanačko čudo. Duga bela had the highest
percentage of Alternaria spp. in 2020 and 2021, which were 2% and 3%, respectively.
Fusarium spp. was presented in percentage more than in Župska rana and Palanačko čudo.
The total germination of the Palanačko čudo, Župska rana and Duga bela during the observed

abstract = "Sweet pepper (Capsicum annum L.) is considered one of the most popular vegetables in the
world. During five consecutive years (2017-2021) the most important indicators of seed
quality (seed germination, energy, seed purity and moisture) and health safety were analyzed
in three varieties of peppers (Capsicum annuum L.): Palanačko čudo, Župska rana and Duga
bela. During the research, very high values of all important parameters of seed quality were
determined. The average determined seed purity was 98.6 % with a variation over the years
of examination from 99.10% to 99.9%. Seed germination varied in the range of 73% to 94%,
while the average germination was 86%. Germination energy was in the range of 61% to
88%. Seed moisture data showed that it was in the tolerance range of 6.3% to 7.4% per test
year, with an average value of 6.9%. Alternaria spp and Fusarium spp were detected in
minimal percent or no detection on variety of Palanačko čudo. Duga bela had the highest
percentage of Alternaria spp. in 2020 and 2021, which were 2% and 3%, respectively.
Fusarium spp. was presented in percentage more than in Župska rana and Palanačko čudo.
The total germination of the Palanačko čudo, Župska rana and Duga bela during the observed
five-year period was above the legal level of minimum and can be classified as quality seed.",

AB  - U formi preglednog rada razmatrana je primena celerovog soka u dve
različite oblasti: jedna se odnosi na očuvanje zdravlje, a druga na
detekciju mutacija. Prikazan je sastav celerovog soka i ukazano na ulogu
pojedinačnih komponenti u zaštiti i popravci zdravlja. Takođe je opisan
efekat enzima CEL I iz ekstrakta celerovog soka u istraživanjima iz
mutacione genetike. Hipotetisano je da CEL I ima potencijalni
zdravstveni doprinos, mada za sada nema takvih naučnih rezultata.
AB  - In the form of a review paper, the application of celery juice in two
different areas was discussed: one related to preserving health, and the
other to detection of mutations. The composition of celery juice is shown
and the role of individual components in protecting and improving health
is indicated. Also, the effect of the enzyme CEL I from celery juice
extract in research on mutational genetics is described. It has been
hypothesized that CEL I have a potential health contribution, although
there are no such scientific results so far.

AB  - One of the goals in eggplant breeding (Solanum melongena L.) is higher yield, as well as
adaptation to different environments. Our study included 20 different eggplant genotypes. The
experiment was conducted at three different locations (Smederevska Palanka, Vranovo and
Kusadak) using a randomized complete block design in three replications. The length and width
of fruit were examined, characteristics important both for the shape and the weight of the fruit.
Two-factors ANOVA determined a statistically significant influence of genotype and locality for
fruit length and width. Average fruit lengths ranged from 134.86 mm (K19) to 246.07 mm
(K38). The mean value of fruit length from the Kusadak locality was significantly (p<0.01)
higher than the general average (181.58 mm), and significantly longer fruit length was recorded
in 10 genotypes: K6, K13, K15, K16, K21, K22, K22, K25, K36 and K39. The highest average
fruit width (120.05 mm) was recorded in genotype K19 and differed significantly in relation to
the average values of other observed genotypes. The lowest average fruit width was recorded in
the K38 genotype at Smederevska Palanka and Kusadak localities (54.33 mm and 54.82 mm).
According to AMMI analysis, the least stable locality in terms of fruit length was Kusadak,
while the most stable was Smederevska Palanka with an AMMI stability coefficient of 7.00. The
most stable genotype was K3 (0.76). The locality Smederevska Palanka was the most stable for
fruit width (9.50), while the most stable genotype was K7 (0.28). The least stable locality was
Vranovo.

AB  - У раду су приказани резултати селекције индустријских сорти
грашка Института за повртарство, Смедеревска Паланка. У

који обухвата стварање индустријских сорти грашка, где су махуна и
зрно израженог квалитета, а имају концентрично сазревање због
једнократног убирања, механизованим начином. Створени су нови
генотипови грашка са уграђеним генетским предусловима за висок
принос, крупноћу и квалитет зрна и махуна, као и отпорности према
проузроковачима болести. Новостворени генотипови Галија, СГ-РР-
3 и С Г-РР-6 припадају грашку са нормалном грађом листа и имају
побољшани квалитет, који се препоручује сетвеним програмима код
произвођача који гаје грашак за индустријски начин убирања и
индустријску прераду, конзервирањем и замрзавањем. Генотипови
ЖЖ-7 и Ж Ж-28 припадају афила типу грашка, са врло фином
махуном и зрном прилагођеним за индустријски начин убирања, тј.
сортама без лишћа које уместо лиски поседују витице
(трансформација је условљена деловањем једног рецесивног гена af)
и те сорте су потпуно отпорне на полегање.
AB  - The paper presents the results of selection of industrial pea varieties of
the Institute of Vegetable Crops, Palanka. Since 2000, the Institute has
been working on a new selection program that includes the creation of
industrial varieties of peas, where the pods and grains are of pronounced
quality and have concentric ripening due to one-time harvesting, in a
mechanized manner. New pea genotypes have been created with built-in
genetic preconditions for high yield, size and quality of grains and pods,
as well as resistance to pathogens.The newly created genotypes Galija,
SG-RR-3 and SG-RR-6 belong to peas with normal leaf structure and
have improved quality, which is recommended for sowing programs at
producers who grow peas for industrial harvesting and industrial
processing, canning and freezing. Genotypes ŽŽ-7 and ŽŽ-28 belong to
the pea afylla type, with a very fine pod and grain adapted for the
industrial method of harvesting, ie. varieties without leaves that have
tendrils instead of coots (transformation is conditioned by the action of
one recessive gene af) and these varieties are completely resistant to
lodging.

AB  - Под утицајем различитих спољних фактора долази до
модификације полне експресије код диње. Етилен има важну улогу у
контроли детерминације пола код диње, а третирањем биљака
етефоном (прекурсором етилена) долази до значајне модификације
пола код ове врсте. Циљ рада је био испитивање утицаја етефона на
хетерозис шест особина плода код диње: маса, дужина, ширина,
дебљина егзокарпа, дебљина мезокарпа, садржај шећера. У огледу је
коришћено 9 генотипова диње од којих 4 моноецична и 5
андромоноецични, као и њихових 22 хибрида. Оглед је спроведен
током две вегетативне сезоне, у Смедеревској Паланци. Утврђен је
хетеротични ефекат свих посматраних особина код већине
хибридних комбинација. Утврђен је позитиван ефекат третмана
биљака етефоном на хетерозис свих посматраних особина, у
зависности од генотипа.
AB  - Sex expression in melon is modified under the influence of various
external factors. Ethylene plays an important role in the control of sex
determination in melons, and by treating plants with ethephon (ethylene
precursor), leads to significant sex modification of this species. The aim
of this study was to examine the effect of ethephon on the heterosis of six
fruit characteristics in melons: weight, length, width, exocarp thickness,
mesocarp thickness, sugar content. Nine melon genotypes were used in
the experiment, of which 4 monoecious and 5 andromonoeous, as well as
their 22 hybrids. The experiment was conducted during two vegetative
seasons, in Smederevska Palanka. The heterotic effect of all observed
traits was determined in most hybrid combinations. A positive effect of
ethephon treatment of plants on heterosis, depending on genotype, was
determined for all observed traits.

модификације полне експресије код диње. Етилен има важну улогу у
контроли детерминације пола код диње, а третирањем биљака
етефоном (прекурсором етилена) долази до значајне модификације
пола код ове врсте. Циљ рада је био испитивање утицаја етефона на
хетерозис шест особина плода код диње: маса, дужина, ширина,
дебљина егзокарпа, дебљина мезокарпа, садржај шећера. У огледу је
коришћено 9 генотипова диње од којих 4 моноецична и 5
андромоноецични, као и њихових 22 хибрида. Оглед је спроведен
током две вегетативне сезоне, у Смедеревској Паланци. Утврђен је
хетеротични ефекат свих посматраних особина код већине
хибридних комбинација. Утврђен је позитиван ефекат третмана
биљака етефоном на хетерозис свих посматраних особина, у
зависности од генотипа., Sex expression in melon is modified under the influence of various
external factors. Ethylene plays an important role in the control of sex
determination in melons, and by treating plants with ethephon (ethylene
precursor), leads to significant sex modification of this species. The aim
of this study was to examine the effect of ethephon on the heterosis of six
fruit characteristics in melons: weight, length, width, exocarp thickness,
mesocarp thickness, sugar content. Nine melon genotypes were used in
the experiment, of which 4 monoecious and 5 andromonoeous, as well as
their 22 hybrids. The experiment was conducted during two vegetative
seasons, in Smederevska Palanka. The heterotic effect of all observed
traits was determined in most hybrid combinations. A positive effect of
ethephon treatment of plants on heterosis, depending on genotype, was
determined for all observed traits.",

AB  - Циљ истраживања је био да се испита утицај старости и дораде
семена на параметре квалитета. У лабораторијским условима су
испитивани параметри: клијавост, енергија клијавости и проценат
влаге семена купуса (Brassica oleracea L.), плавог патлиџана
(Solanum melongena L.) и д иње ( Cucumis melo L.) током три
узастопне године. Резултати су показали да постоји разлика у
клијавости семена различитих култура. Процес дораде семена је
највише утицао на повећање клијавости семена плавог патлиџана, а
најмање семена диње. Са годинама старости, код свих сорти,
опадали су сви испитивани параметри али у различитом проценту.
Процентуално најмањи пад клијавости са старошћу семена је
забележен код диње, а највећи код плавог патлиџана. Слични
резултати су забележени и код енергије клијања. У случају влаге
семена, највећи процентуални губитак влаге је забележен код семена
диње, док је код семена купуса и плавог патлиџана тај губитак био
уједначен и мањи.
AB  - The aim of the research was to examine the influence of seed age and
processing on quality parameters. In laboratory conditions, the following
parameters were examined: germination, germination energy and
moisture percentage of cabbage seeds (Brassica oleracea L.), blue
eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) and melon (Cucumis melo L.) for three
consecutive years. The results showed that there is a difference in seed
germination of different culturе. The process of seed processing had the
greatest influence on the increase of germination of blue eggplant seeds
and the least of melon seeds. With age, in all varieties, all examined
parameters decreased, but in a different percentage. The smallest decrease
in germination with seed age was recorded in melons, and the largest in
blue eggplant. Similar results were observed for germination energy. In
the case of seed moisture, the highest percentage loss of moisture was
recorded in melon seeds, while in cabbage and blue eggplant seeds this
loss was even and smaller.

AB  - Significant genotype x environment interaction for quantitative traits, such is grain yield, reduces the usefulness of genotype means, over all environments, for selecting superior genotypes. AMMI model is a valuable statistical tool in identifying systemic variation contained in the interaction effect. Obtained data could be applied in maximizing yield potential in every environment based on both narrow and wide genotype adaptability, without the necessity of developing breeding programs for smaller targeted environments. Precise assortment of superior genotypes, with the assistance of AMMI model, leads to the better recommendation of newly bred hybrids, and thus increasing maize grain yield in a targeted environment. In this research genotype x environment interaction and yield stability of 36 maize hybrids of FAO 300-700 maturity group was investigating. The trial was set according to Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD). Data were processed in order to obtain average estimates of grain yield, and yield stability was assessed by the method of AMMI analysis. The highest average grain yield was achieved in 2011 (11.62 t/ha), and the lowest in the most stressful and dry 2012 (6.90 t/ha). In the region Loznica L2 the highest average yield was noticed (13.81 t/ha), while at L7 (Sremska Mitrovica) average grain yield was the lowest (6.97 t/ha). Results of AMMI analysis gave precise recommendation for production of maize hybrids in certain environments, by determining winning areas of hybrids H20, H11 and H36. Medium early maturing and high yielding hybrids (H11 and H20) are therefore considered more favorable for production in environments with lower precipitation, while high yielding and more stable hybrids H21 and H35 are suitable for a wider range of environments. Hybrid H36 (FAO 700) showed its full potential at L2, and L3 which did not suffer from a lack of moisture. This hybrid also expressed its best potential in environments with favorable conditions.

Genetic variability of free energy in a function of drought tolerance in common bean accessions

AB  - Characterisation of bean genotypes, particularly local landraces is important for ongoing breeding programs, especially for drought tolerance. Susceptibility to drought is emphasized when bean is grown as a stubble crop and sown at the middle of summer. The aim of this study was to compare variability of ten bean genotypes to optimal (25 degrees C) and higher (30 degrees C) temperatures in combination with optimal (80%) and reduced (40%) field water capacity (FWC), from the point of growth (root and shoot length and fresh matter accumulation) and thermodynamic parameters of free energy (calculated parameter after drying at 60 degrees C, 105 degrees C and 130 degrees C) during the early seedlings stage. Significant and positive correlation between root length and fresh matter with free energy at symplast and chemically bound water occurred under temperature stress (i.e. 30 degrees C). Root growth and elongation were affected by drought stress, i.e. under a combination of high temperature (30 degrees C) and water deficit (40% FWC). Based on higher energy consumption, the ability of shoot to continue a growth in stressful conditions could be possible to achieve, as was confirm through significant and positive correlation between evaluated growth parameters in shoot and free energy of free water. It could be concluded that most of the examined dry bean accessions expressed some sensitivity to stress applied. Among genotypes tested, local landrace zecak expressed lesser susceptibility to stresses applied. Accession Maksa was more tolerant to changes at cytoplasmic level, while Medijana and Sataja 425 expressed root i.e. shoot stress tolerance. Those accessions could be considered as potentially drought tolerant genotypes.

Comparisons of fruit and seed yield among species of the family Cucurbitaceae grown on the vertisol

AB  - In this paper was compared average fruit and seed yields of different varieties grown on the vertisol belonging to five species of the family Cucurbitaceae (melon, watermelon, summer squash, winter squash, butternut squah) based on the two-year data (2010 and 2011). Five genotypes of melon (Sezam, Cerovaca, Galia, Charentais, Ananas), five genotypes of watermelon (Crimson sweet, Top gun, Greybelle, Fantasy, Rosa), five genotypes of summer squash (Ezra, Opal, Beogradska, Fina, Romanesco), three genotypes of winter squash (Sedef, Domaća bela, Plovdivska siva) and two genotypes of butternut squash (Nektar, L2706) were used. The experiment was set up in Smederevska Palanka. After the production of seedlings in the greenhouse of the Institute for vegetable crops, plants were transfered and planted in the open field. Two characteristics were observed: fruit yield per hectare and seed yield per hectare. The main objective of this study was to identify the genotypes which could be recommended for the production on vertisol. Very significant differences of fruit and seed yield per hectare were found between the genotypes and years for melon, watermelon, summer squash and winter squash. The highest average fruit yield was recorded for genotypes: Cerovaca (melon), Fantasy (watermelon), Fina (summer squash), Plovdivska siva (winter squash) and L2706 (butternut squash).
AB  - Poređenje prosečnih prinosa ploda i semena razlicitih sorti gajenih na zemljištu tipa smonice u okviru pet vrsta iz familije Cucurbitaceae (dinje, lubenice, tikvice, tikve i muskatne tikvice) je izvršeno na osnovu podataka dvogodišnjeg ogleda (2010 i 2011). Korišćeno je 5 genotipova dinje (Sezam, Cerovaca, Galia, Charentais, Ananas), 5 genotipova lubenice (Crimson sweet, Top gun, Greybelle, Fantasy, Rosa), 5 genotipova tikvice (Ezra, Opal, Beogradska, Fina, Romanesco), 3 genotipa tikve (Sedef, Domaća bela, Plovdivska siva) i 2 genotipa muskatne tikvice (Nektar, L2706). Ogled je postavljen u Smederevskoj Palanci. Nakon proizvodnje rasada u staklenoj bašti Instituta za povrtarstvo izvršeno je rasađivanja biljaka na otvoreno polje. Posmatrane su dve osobine: prinos ploda po hektaru i prinos semena po hektaru. Osnovni cilj rada je bio da se odrede genotipovi koji bi mogli da se preporuče za gajenje na zemljištu tipa smonica. Utvrđene su veoma značajne razlike prinosa ploda i semena po hektaru između posmatranih genotipova i godina kod dinje, lubenice, tikvice i tikve. Two characteristics were observed: fruit yield per hectare and seed yield per hectare. The main objective of this study was to identify the genotypes which could be recommended for the production on vertisol. Very significant differences of fruit and seed yield per hectare were found between the genotypes and years for melon, watermelon, summer squash and winter squash. The highest average fruit yield was recorded for genotypes: Cerovaca (melon), Fantasy (watermelon), Fina (summer squash), Plovdivska siva (winter squash) and L2706 (butternut squash)., Poređenje prosečnih prinosa ploda i semena razlicitih sorti gajenih na zemljištu tipa smonice u okviru pet vrsta iz familije Cucurbitaceae (dinje, lubenice, tikvice, tikve i muskatne tikvice) je izvršeno na osnovu podataka dvogodišnjeg ogleda (2010 i 2011). Korišćeno je 5 genotipova dinje (Sezam, Cerovaca, Galia, Charentais, Ananas), 5 genotipova lubenice (Crimson sweet, Top gun, Greybelle, Fantasy, Rosa), 5 genotipova tikvice (Ezra, Opal, Beogradska, Fina, Romanesco), 3 genotipa tikve (Sedef, Domaća bela, Plovdivska siva) i 2 genotipa muskatne tikvice (Nektar, L2706). Ogled je postavljen u Smederevskoj Palanci. Nakon proizvodnje rasada u staklenoj bašti Instituta za povrtarstvo izvršeno je rasađivanja biljaka na otvoreno polje. Posmatrane su dve osobine: prinos ploda po hektaru i prinos semena po hektaru. Osnovni cilj rada je bio da se odrede genotipovi koji bi mogli da se preporuče za gajenje na zemljištu tipa smonica. Utvrđene su veoma značajne razlike prinosa ploda i semena po hektaru između posmatranih genotipova i godina kod dinje, lubenice, tikvice i tikve. Najveći prosečni prinos ploda zabeležen je kod genotipova Cerovaca (dinja), Fantasy (lubenica), Fina (tikvica), Plovdivska siva (tikva) i L2706 (muskatna tikvica).",

the production of seed oils. In this paper was investigated genotype x environment
(GxE) stability of yield per plant in melons that have different length of growing
season. Early, medium and late melon genotypes were grown in greenhouses and in
the open field. Experiments were conducted at the Institute for Vegetable Crops in
Smederevska Palanka, Serbia, during years 2010 and 2011. The aim of study was to
determine melon genotype with stable yield per plant in both modes of production.
Additional, we have set the goal to identified melon genotypes suitable for
greenhouse production and melon genotypes suitable for the production in the open
field. For analyses of GxE stability we used the additive main effect and
multiplicative interaction (AMMI) model. We have calculated values of principal
components (PC) of genotypes and environments, and values of genotype x
environment interaction (GEI). It was found that earlier melon genotypes have a
higher yield per plant when grown in an open field, while late melon genotypes had
higher yield per plant when grown in a greenhouse. The most stable melon genotypes
were “A2-3lb“ and „Honeydew“, while the least stable were melon genotypes „ED3“ and „Chinese muskmelon“.

AB  - Seven traits related to flowering and sex expression in melon were studied and their reaction to application of two growth regulators (ethrel and gibberellic acid) was observed. Four monoecious genotypes (Sesame, ED-3, ED-4, Pobeditel) and four andromonoecious genotypes (Chinese muskmelon, Anannas, Fiata, A2-3lb) had been used for experiments. According to the results, ethrel had higher effects on the investigated traits than gibberellic acid. Ethrel increased the number of perfect flowers per plant for 7.18 (31.42%), reduced the number of male flowers per plant for 21.47 (17.98%), affected earlier appearance of the first pistillate/perfect flower for 3.68 days, and delayed the appearance of the first staminate flower for 16.07 days. Changes in the last two traits caused an extension of the period from the emergence of the first pistillate/perfect to the first staminate flower from 0.1 to 21.57 days, which represents the strongest effect of ethrel. Gibberellic acid had generally opposite effects on the studied traits.

AB  - U ovom radu je ispitivana stabilnost ranih, srednjeranih i kasnih genotipova dinje gajenih u zaštićenom prostoru i na otvorenom polju kroz analizu interacije genotip x spoljna sredina (GxE). Osnovni cilj rada je bio da se odredi koji genotip dinje je najstabilniji. Ogledi na polju i u zatvorenom prostoru su izvedeni u Institutu za povrtarstvo u Smederevskoj Palanci, u toku 2010. i 2011. godine. Ispitivan je prinos po biljci kod devet genotipova dinje. Pri analizi podataka korišćena je AMMI analiza, na osnovu koje su dobijene glavne komponente genotipova i sredina, odnosno interakcije GxE. Ovo je prvi put u našoj zemlji da se koristi ovaj metod u oceni stabilnosti genotipova dinje. Utvrđeno je da genotipovi dinje koji ranije sazrevaju imaju veći prinos po biljci ukoliko se gaje na otvorenom polju, dok kasnostasni genotipovi daju veći prinos po biljci ukoliko se gaje u staklenoj bašti.

AB  - Efficacy of maize breeding program based on maize grain and choice of breeding method depend on effects of genes included in expression of this trait. The objective of this study was to determine genetic parameters for grain yield using generation mean analysis (GMA) in two maize single-cross hybrids with one parent in common. Dominance gene effects were the most important in the inheritance of the grain yield. Significant values of two-gene epistasis were obtained. Interaction between dominant genes was in most instances of duplicate type, and was associated to a smaller effect of dominant genes. Less importance was estimated for epistatic effects between additive genes and additive and dominant genes which varied a large degree depending on the hybrid under consideration and on the environment. Higher values obtained for the interaction with the environment of the dominant in comparison to additive genes showed that it is not possible to predict with greater confidence the performances of the grain yield in both hybrids, so that successful estimation of the value of each inbred line can be derived only based on its performance in the particular hybrid combination.

AB  - Based on the obtained results it can be concluded that the analysis of variance showed highly significant differences between genotypes for all traits except a pericarp thickness, which is the proof that the divergent breeding material was included into selection. Parental genotypes had higher average values than the mean for all hybrid traits. The analysis of heterosis and specific combining abilities (SCA) and heterosis effects based on seven yield components that were observed in this study and tested on six parental genotypes and their fifteen diallel hybrids showed a relatively rare occurrence of high heterosis and specific combining ability values. The highest and statistically significant value of specific combining abilities for fruit weight per plant was recorded in the hybrid BC-01 x NA-11 (688.94). For the majority of traits, the hybrid SM-34 x LE-16 had high, positive and significant combining abilities, and can be considered to be the two best parental genotypes combined. Based on said above, it can be concluded that there is no a good general combiner in the breeding material, because poor general combiners can also produce high values of specific combining abilities, which is probably a consequence of the additive type (additive x additive) of the interaction between the parents. It is desirable that parental genotypes are divergent genotypes. Only crossing of yielding lines can result in yielding progenies, while hybridisation of divergent genotypes may result in desirable recombination of genes for the improvement in later generations. Combining abilities and heterosis should be tested for each individual case.
AB  - Cilj ovog istraživanja je bio da se za sedam komponenti prinosa (dužina i širina ploda, debljina perikarpa ploda, broj komora ploda, broj plodova po biljci, masa ploda i masa plodova po biljci) izvrši analiza posebnih kombinacionih sposobnosti i heterozisa u odnosu na boljeg roditelja na bazi srednjih vrednosti roditelja i njihovih dijalelnioh hibrida. Na osnovu dobijenih rezultata istraživanja može se zaključiti da na varijabilnost ovih osobina utiče genotip. Roditeljski genotipovi su ispoljili veće prosečne vrednosti za ova svojstva u odnosu na svoje hibride. Najveću i statistički značajniju vrednost posebnih kombinacionih sposobnosti za masu ploda po biljci imao je hibrid BC-01 x NA-11 (688,94). Hibrid SM-34 x LE-16 je imao za većinu svojstava visoke i pozitivne i značajne kombinacione sposobnosti, te se može smatrati da se ova dva roditeljska genotipa najbolje kombinuju. Visoke i značajne vrednosti heterozisa za masu ploda po biljci imali su hibridi BC-01 x NA-11, RU-14 x NA-11 i SM-34 x LE-16. Iz napred navedenog se može posredno zaključiti da u selekcionom materijalu ne postoji genotip koji je dobar opšti kombinator, jer visoke vrednosti posebnih kombinacionih sposbnosti mogu dati i loši opšti kombinatori, što je verovatno posledica delovanja aditivnog tipa (aditivni x aditivni) interakcije među roditeljima. Poželjno je da roditeljski parovi budu divergentni genotipovi. Ukrštanjem samo rodnih linija mogu se dobiti rodniji potomci, a hibridizacijom divergentnih genotipova mogu se očekivati poželjne rekombinacije gena za oplemenjivanje u kasnijim generacijama. Kombinacione sposobnosti i heterozis bi trebalo proveravati za svaki konkretni slučaj.

AB  - In this study, eight melon genotypes belonging to two groups of cultivars according to flowering type (monoecious and andromonoecious) were treated with the plant growth regulator ethrel with the aim to induce the modification of their sex expression. Experiments with treated and control plants were set up in the fields of the Institute for Vegetable Crops at Smederevska Palanka, Serbia, during two years (2010 and 2011). Effects of ethrel were observed on three traits in individual plants: 1) total number of flowers, 2) the percentage of pistillate and perfect flowers and 3) the percentage of staminate flowers per plant. Results showed that exogenous application of ethrel affected decreasing of the total number of flowers, as well as, the change in frequency of flower types within individual melon plants. Ethrel stimulated the formation of pistillate and perfect flowers followed by the deformation of anthers within the perfect flowers. Additionally, ethrel affected decreasing of percentage of staminate flowers in all eight studied melon genotypes. These results are important for the improvement of the F1 melon hybrid seed production in Serbia. It was found that simple spraying of young melon plants with ethrel, eliminated the need for emasculation of flowers in mother plants in crosses.
AB  - U ovom radu, osam genotipova dinje koje pripadaju dvema grupama sorti prema tipu cvetanja (monoecijskim i andromonoecijskim) je tretirano etrelom u cilju indukovanja modifikacija u ekspresiji pola. Ogledi sa tretiranim i kontrolnim biljkama postavljeni su na poljima Instituta za povrtarstvo u Smederevskoj Palanci, Srbija, tokom dve godine (2010. i 2011). Efekat etrela posmatran je na tri svojstva individualnih biljaka: 1) ukupan broj cvetova, 2) procenat ženskih i hermafroditnih cvetova i 3) procenat muških cvetova. Rezultati su pokazali da primena etrela izaziva smanjenje ukupnog broja cvetova, kao i promene u zastupljenosti tipova cvetova kod individualnih biljaka dinje. Etrel je stimulisao formiranje ženskih i hermafroditnih cvetova, uz deformisanje antera unutar hermafroditnih cvetova. Takođe, etrel je uticao na smanjenje učešća muških cvetova kod svih osam proučavanih genotipova dinje. Ovi rezultati značajni su za unapređenje proizvodnje semena F1 hibrida dinje u Srbiji. Utvrđeno je da obično prskanje mladih biljčica dinje etrelom, eliminiše potrebu za emaskulacijom cvetova majčinskih biljaka u ukrštanjima.

Inheritance of yield components in tomato

AB  - The aim of the present study was to estimate, on the basis of diallel crossing, superior-parent heterosis, components of genetic variability and trait heritability for three yield components in tomato, and to perform the VrWr regression analysis. Six different tomato inbred lines originating from local and introduced breeding material were selected for the study. The hybrids expressed greater mean values for the majority of the traits than the inbred lines. The value of additive component of variance (D) was higher than the value of the dominant variance (H1 and H2) for the number of fruits per plant and the average fruit weight, while the value of the dominant component of variance was higher for the fruit weight per plant. Positive values of additive x dominant genetic effect interaction (F) for the observed traits point to a greater participation of dominant alleles in the inheritance of these traits, which was confirmed by the coefficients H2/4H1 (0.208-0.228) and by the ratio KD/KR being greater than unity (1.129-1.536). The values of the average degree of dominance H / D 1 , lower than unity for the number of fruits per plant and the average fruit weight, indicate that these traits were inherited by partial dominance. Furthermore, values of the degree of dominance greater than unity for the fruit weight indicate that this trait was inherited by dominance or superdominance. These conclusions were also confirmed by high values of the broad- and narrow-sense heritability that varied from 98.88% to 99.44%, i.e., from 45.06 to 87.51%, respectively, as well as, by the VrWr regression for the observed traits in the F1 generation.
AB  - Cilj istraživanja je da se za tri komponente prinosa paradajza procene: heterozis u odnosu na boljeg roditelja, komponente genetičke varijabilnosti, heritabilnosti osobina na bazi dialelnog ukrštanja i izvrši VrWr regresiona analiza. Odabrano je šest različitih linija paradajza poreklom iz domaćeg i introdukovanog selekcionog materijala. Hibridi su u odnosu na linije ispoljili veće srednje vrednosti za većinu osobina. Vrednost aditivne komponente varijanse (D) veća je od dominantne (H1 i H2) za broj plodova po biljci i prosečnu masu ploda, dok je za masu ploda po biljci dobijena veća vrednost dominantne komponete varijanse. Pozitivne vrednosti interakcije aditivni x dominantni efekat gena (F) za ispitivane osobine ukazuju da je u nasleđivanju ovih osobina veće učešće dominantnih alela, a to potvrđuju i koeficijenti H2/4H1 (0,208-0,228) kao i odnos Kd/Kr koji su veći od jedan (1,129-1,536). Vrednosti prosečnog stepena dominacije H / D 1 manje od jedan (broj plodova po biljci i prosečna masa ploda) ukazuju da se ove osobine nasleđuju parcijalnom dominacijom. Za masu ploda po biljci vrednosti stepena dominacije veći je od jedan, što ukazuje da se ova osobina nasleđuje dominacijom ili superdominacijom. Ove zaključke potvrđuju i visoke vrednosti heritabilnosti u širem i užem smislu koje su varirale od 98,88% - 99,44%, odnosno 45,06-87,51%, kao i VrWr regresije za ispitivane osobine u F1 generaciji.

Ove zaključke potvrđuju i visoke vrednosti heritabilnosti u širem i užem smislu koje su varirale od 98,88% - 99,44%, odnosno 45,06-87,51%, kao i VrWr regresije za ispitivane osobine u F1 generaciji.",

Significance of combining abilities and heterosis for grain yield of maize

AB  - The estimation of variability of five maize inbred lines and their diallel hybrids related to the grain yield, superior-parent heterosis and general and specific combining abilities after the method developed by Griffing, (1956a) (Method I, mathematical model I) was the aim of this study. According to obtained results it can be concluded that the variability of this trait is significantly affected by a genotype, year and a genotype x year interaction. Since the depression of the ear length occurs in inbreds in inbreeding, this trait was greater in hybrids than inbreds, as expected. The highest average heterosis for the grain yield was determined in the hybrids F-7R x NS-1445 (157,38% in 2005.) and F-7R x BL-47 (114.23% in 2006). The analysis of variance of combining abilities for the grain yield pointed out to highly significantly positive values of GCA and SCA for the observed trait in both years of investigation. Non-additive genes (dominance and epistasis) had the significant importance for grain yield heritability, indicating that the GCA to SCA ratio was bellow 1. The inbreds F-7R and NS-1445 were genotypes with the highest GCA effects, while hybrid combinations NS-1445 x BL-47, F-7RxW-37A, F-7RxNS-1445 were population with significant SCA effects in both years of investigation. They encompass both parents with high GCA effects or one parent with high GCA effects and other with low GCA effects. This is probably a result of additive gene effects (additive x additive) of the interaction between parents.
AB  - Cilj ovog istraživanja je bio da se za prinos zrna kukuruza procene: varijabilnost inbred linija i njihovih dialelnih hibrida, heterozis u odnosu na boljeg roditelja i opšte i posebne kombinacione sposobnosti. Na osnovu dobijenih rezultata dvogodišnjeg istraživanja može se zaključiti da na varijabilnost ove osobine značajno utiču genotip, godina i njihova interakcija. Kao posledica fenomena heterozisa i depresije usled inbridinga, hibridi su u odnosu na linije u obe godine imali značajno veće srednje vrijednosti za prinos. Ispitivani genotipovi su specifično reagovali na uslove proizvodnje za prinos. Najveći prosečan prinos zrna imao je hibrid F-7R x NS-1445 u 2005. i njegova recipročna verzija u 2006. godini. Ustanovljene su značajne vrednosti OKS i PKS kod prinosa zrna. Odnos između OKS i PKS, pokazuje da dominantno delovanje gena ima preovlađujuću ulogu u nasleđivanju prinosa zrna. Najbolju OKS za prinos zrna pokazala je linija NS- 1445. Najveću vrednost PKS za prinos zrna pokazao je hibrid NS-1445 x BL-47 u obe godine. To je dokaz da pojedine hibridne kombinacije koje uključuju jednog roditelja sa dobrim OKS i drugog roditelja sa lošim OKS, mogu imati izuzetno vredne performanse. Ovo je verovatno posledica delovanja aditivnog tipa (aditivni x aditivni) interakcije među roditeljima. Ustanovljeno je da recipročno ukrštanje utiče na efekat PKS za prinos zrna, jer osim nuklearnih gena i plazma geni imaju važnu ulogu u nasleđivanju prinosa kukuruza. Najveću razliku u vrijednosti PKS za prinos zrna između direktnog i recipročnog ukrštanja ispoljio je hibrid F-7R x BL-47 u obe godine proučavanja. Pri tome su značajno veći prinosi ostvareni korišćenjem linije F-7R na poziciji majke umjesto oca.

AB  - A set of five maize inbred lines and their diallel hybrids of the F1 generation for grain yield and yield components (ear lenght, kernel row number and kernel number per row) were investigated in this study. A comparative trial with inbreds and hybrids was set at Banja Luka in 2005 and 2006. The analysis of genetic variance components and regression analysis were done after Jinks, 1954, Hayman, 1954, Mather and Jinks, 1971. Dominant components (H1 and H2) of genetic variance were greater than additive ones (D) for all studied traits except the kernel row number. Results on the regression analysis point out to super-dominance in inheritance of all traits, but the kernel row number, for which a partial dominance was estimated. The high broad sense heritability was registered for all traits, indicating a great significance of dominant genes for their expression. As expected, the highest narrow sense heritability was detected for the kernel row number, due to a higher frequency of additive genes. .
AB  - Cilj ovog istraživanja je bio da se za četiri svojstva kukuruza oceni varijabilnost inbred linija i njihovih dijalelnih hibrida i procene komponente genetičke varijabilnosti i heritabilnosti na bazi dijalelnog seta. Utvrđeno je da na varijabilnost ispitivanih svojstava značajno utiču genotip, godina i njihova interakcija. Hibridi su u odnosu na linije ispoljili veće srednje vrednosti za većinu svojstava. Analiza komponenti genetičke varijanse pokazuje da su dominantne komponente bile veće od aditivne i imale važniju ulogu u nasleđivanju svih ispitivanih svojstava, osim za broj redova zrna gde je aditivna genetička varijansa bila značajnija. F parametar, kao i frekvencija dominantnih gena ukazuju da dominantni geni preovlađuju nad recesivnim za većinu svojstava. Sva svojstva, osim broja redova zrna, se nasleđuju superdominantno. Odnos dominantih i recesivnih gena kod roditelja pokazuje da su za prinos zrna, dužinu klipa i broj zrna u redu preovladavali dominantni, a za broj redova zrna recesivni geni. Za sva ispitivana svojstva, osim za broj redova zrna, dobijene su niske vrednosti heritabilnosti u užem, a visoke u širem smislu. .
