AB - This study aimed to assess the ecological status/potential of the Čemernica and Dičina rivers (Zapadna Morava basin) based on epilithic diatoms and supporting physico-chemical parameters, as well as to explore indicative properties of the detected macroalgae. The sampling and analysis of benthic algae and measurement of physico-chemical parameters were carried out in August 2023. The ecological status/potential of the Čemernica River was poor to bad at all investigated sites (ČR1, ČR2, ČR3) based on diatom indices and physico-chemical parameters. Low diatom indices values and the presence of the macroalgae Stigeoclonium tenue indicated organic pollution. In the Dičina River, good ecological status was assessed at all sites (DR1-DR4) based on the diatom indices, while poor ecological status has been assessed at almost all sites (DR1, DR2, DR3) based on the physico-chemical parameters, except at DR4, where the ecological status was good. The high coverage of Cladophora glomerata in both rivers indicated nutrient loading, which aligned with the results of the physico-chemical parameters.

AB - The Lepenica River is the most important watercourse in the city of Kragujevac. Regardless of its importance, this river and its tributaries are extremely poorly investigated from a biological aspect. Only a few investigations were conducted from the end of the 20th century. After that, only physicochemical and microbiological parameters were monitored by scientists and Public Institutions. Our research was performed in 2021 at five localities at the Lepenica River and included an analysis of phytobenthos, macroinvertebrate, and fish communities, with the aim to assess ecological status/potential according to National Regulative. Our results indicate that the ecological status of this river was good (II class) only at one locality before the industrial and urbanized zone of the city of Kragujevac. From the entrance into the city of Kragujevac, the Lepenica River becomes highly polluted by multiple pollutants and belongs to the V class of ecological potential.

AB - Due to multiple modern stressors, there are rapid changes in inland water habitats and
irreversible biodiversity loss. Hence, in order to detect parts of rivers or basins with
originally preserved habitat and biodiversity, detailed hydrobiological research of
inland waters (simultaneous research of basic abiotic parameters and hydrobiocenosis)
are necessary. The aim is to detect habitats' biological and ecological values, which are
important for the permanent preservation of genetic and species diversity and the
stability and functionality of the entire ecosystem or catchment area. In terms of
ecology and conservation, these habitats have the same importance for inland waters
and catchment areas as the hot-spot areas for preserving global biodiversity. The
importance of these areas in this work is presented on the example of the Veliki Rzav
River (Serbia). In order to support the program of declaring the river as a protected
area, the research was conducted in 2021. In the Veliki Rzav River, many biological
values such as preserved and high biodiversity of algae, macroinvertebrates, and fish
were detected. For the first time in Serbia, new species of algae were detected, along
with the significant presence of sensitive taxa in the macroinvertebrate community and
a stable brown trout population with the detection of the new haplotype.

AB - The first data on the Lemanea genus in Serbia come
from the late 20th century. Only one species, L. fluviatilis,
was reported from 10 localities in Serbian riverine
ecosystems between 1991 and 2017. Extensive research on
this genus was performed in April–November 2017–2019,
surveying 150 localities in 97 upland and mountain rivers.
During this study period, the Lemanea genus was recorded
at 14 localities in 12 rivers, while it disappeared from five
previously reported localities. A total of four taxa were
identified: Lemanea fucina, L. rigida, Lemanea sp. and
L. fluviatilis. Lemanea fucina and L. rigida were recorded in
Serbia for the first time. L. fluviatilis was the most common
taxon. Our research confirmed that Lemanea species
prefer similar specific environmental conditions. These
species were found in temperate, soft or moderately hard,
well-oxygenated and weakly alkaline waters, with low,
moderate or high conductivity, and in waters with low
content of inorganic nutrients. Due to their sensitivity to
changes in environmental conditions, Lemanea species
are exposed to negative anthropogenic impact leading to
the degradation of their habitats. Intensive construction of
small hydropower plants has threatened most habitats of
the Rhodophyta species in the last few years.

present an algal diversity, ecological status assessment, and negative anthropogenic impacts
threatening this river. For ecological status assessment purposes, the diatom indices
phytobenthos and physico-chemical parameters of water were used. The typology and the

AB - This paper provides information on the morphology, reproduction and distribution of a freshwater
brown alga, Porterinema fluviatile (Porter) Waern (Phaeophyceae). The alga was recorded in oligotrophic
water from Mlava Spring, a karst limnocrene in eastern Serbia (44°11’298”N, 21°47’021”E). This is
the first record of freshwater brown algae in general in Serbia, and the first record of P. fluviatile in
southeastern Europe. The thallus of P. fluviatile formed small, dark-brown tufts, with multicellular,
uniseriate filaments that were irregularly branched. An anastomosis was noticeable between some
filaments. The vegetative cells of the young filaments were cylindrical (17-38 μm long × 2.5-4.0 μm
wide). The cells had 1 or 2, rarely 3, plate-like parietal plastids. The reproductive organs of P. fluviatile
(asexual reproduction) originate from the transformation of vegetative cells. Elongated vegetative cells develop inflated vegetative cells (5-10 μm in diameter) with lipid droplets. Further transformation of these cells leads to the formation of intercalary plurilocular sporangia with 4 to 8 (rarely 16) cells. Nonmotile, round aplanospores, which develop by protoplast division in elongated vegetative cells, are described for the first time in this species.
Porterinema fluviatile (Porter) Waern (Phaeophyceae).
algue brune d’eau douce, Porterinema fluviatile (Porter) Waern (Phaeophyceae).

AB - Karst springs represent one of the most important freshwater habitats due to
the specific hydrological, physical and chemical characteristics as well as specific
living communities which rarely could be found in other aquatic ecosystems.
However, these springs are biologically very poorly investigated in Serbia. The
Jelovičko spring, located in the Vidlič part of the Nature Park Stara mountain (Eastern
Serbia), belongs to the group of limnocrene siphonal karst springs. Algological
research of this spring was conducted in August 2018. Samples of macroscopic algal
aggregations were collected and physical and chemical parameters of water were
measured. Seven types of macroscopic aggregations were identified: free filaments
(Paralemanea sp.), brown threads (colonies of Melosira varians and Odontidium sp.),
green threads (Spirogyra sp. and colonies of Odontidium sp.; Microspora sp. and
colonies of Odontidium sp.), brown gelatinous threads (colonies of Odontidium sp.,
M. varians, and chironomid eggs), green gelatinous threads (Tribonema sp., colonies
of Odontidiumsp. and M. varians), gelatinous filaments (Batrachospermum sp.),
cushion-like forms (Vaucheria sp.). This paper presents the new findings of two rare
red algae of the genera Batrachospermum and Paralemanea in Serbia and the first
appearance of two Rhodophyta species at the same locality in Serbian aquatic
ecosystems.

AB - Algae are an integral part of the aquarium and it is impossible to get rid of them com-pletely, most commonly they are unwanted phenomena. The increased concentration of phosphate and nitrates is responsible for the occurrence of excessive amounts of algae in aquariums. The appearance of algae is essentially influenced by the intensity of the light and the length of the aquarium's exposure to light. The research of the algae was carried out at the Center for Fishery and Biodiversity Conservation of Inland Waters - Aquarium Kragujevac, Faculty of Science. The survey covered a total of 18 aquariums (1 marine, 4 tropical and 13 coldwater). The periphyton from all aquariums, was collected by scraping from glass, stones, by pipette along the sand surface, at plants and corals (in marine aquar-ium). In the marine aquarium, algae have been successively developed and belonged taxa were from: Cyanobacteria, Rhodophyta, Xanthophyta, Bacillariophyta, Phaeophyta and Chlorophyta. Immediately behind forming in the marine aquarium Licmophora sp. was observed and after that Trichodesmium erythraeum (Ehr.) ex Gom. was dominant. It co-vers almost the entire bottom of the aquarium, as well as the surface of many corals. All algae have formed macroscopic aggregations on different types of substrates (Vaucheria litorea Hofman ex C. Ag., and Phymatoliton sp. ). The results of the algae analysis at tropical aquarium indicate the presence taxa from: Cyanobacteria, Bacillariophyta and Chlorophyta. The most dominant species in the period of investigation of tropical aquar-iums is Achnanthidium exiguum (Grun.) Czarn. Algae from the genus Oedogonium and Cladophora was also dominate next to the species from Bacillariophyta. In coldwater aquariums, there was a different situation, it was detected taxa from Cyanobacteria, Xan-thophyta, Bacillariophyta and Chlorophyta, but the most dominant taxa in the examined aquariums were Cyanobacteria. Algae in aquarium are an undesirable occurrence, if they have already appeared it could be removed by different methods (mechanical, biological and chemical).

AB - Red algae (Rhodophyta) are important algal group in freshwater ecosystems owing to their stenovalence in relation to substrate, water temperature, water transparency, current velocity and water quality, and because of that they can be used as a bioindicators of water pollution. Degradation of their habitat (pollution, small hydropower plant, etc.) leads to that Rhodophyta are endangered in many countries or already extinct. Because of that, they have been protected by national legislation in a lot of countries. The freshwater red algae are very poorly investigated in Republic of Montenegro. From 1970 to 2009 only seven taxa of freshwater Rhodophyta were found, at eight localities of rivers and lakes (Bangia atropurpurea (Roth) C. Ag. – Piva River, Tara River and her tributaries; Batra-chospermum sp. – Tara River and tributaries; B. gelatinosum (L.) De Candolle (as B. moniliforme (L.) Roth) – basin of the Piva lake; B. turfosum Bory (as B. vagum (Ag.) Sirod.) – Lim River; Chantransia chalybea (Roth) Bory – Tara River and her tributaries; Ch. hermmani (Roth) Desv. (as Ch. violacea Kütz. – Tara River and her tributaries; Lem-anea fucina Bory – Tara River, Splavište locality). After 2009 no literature data is avail-able. During 2018 we have found thalli of two rare Rhodophyta at new localities in Mon-tenegro (Batrachospermum sp. in Mlinski potok stream in the National park Durmitor and L. fucina in the Tara River, at new locality). These new findings are very important from the aspect of knowledge of diversity, distribution and ecology of freshwater Rhodophyta.

abstract = "Red algae (Rhodophyta) are important algal group in freshwater ecosystems owing to their stenovalence in relation to substrate, water temperature, water transparency, current velocity and water quality, and because of that they can be used as a bioindicators of water pollution. – Tara River and tributaries; B. gelatinosum (L.) De Candolle (as B. moniliforme (L.) AB - The investigation of the Despotovica River was carried out in April 2017 with the
aim to provide an indicative ecological status assessment. Phytobenthos and aquatic
macroinvertebrate communities were followed as well as physico-chemical parameters of water.
Ecological status assessment is given based on biological (epilithic diatoms and
macroinvertebrates) and supporting physico-chemical water quality elements, according to the
Serbian National regulation on parameters of ecological and chemical status of surface waters
and parameters of chemical and quantitative status of ground waters. The ecological status was
determined by the worst evaluated water quality element. Based on the analysis of investigated
parameters of biological and physico-chemical water quality elements, the indicative ecological
status of the Despotovica River could be assessed as bad (class V), which is the result of the
river's load of organic and inorganic origin but also of heavy metals.

AB - Due to increasingly present eutrofication of the aquatic ecosystems comes to frequent
occurrence of Cyanobacterial blooms, often followed by the production of cyanotoxins in
their cells. Cyanotoxins are very poisonous substances, which when released into the water
represent a threat to both aquatic and terrestrial organisms (Sedmak & Svirčev, 2011). The
massive accidentally fish kill caused by blooming of cyanobacteria, in Serbia are already
known (Đorđević & Simić, 2014; Đorđević et al., 2015).
Fish comes into contact with cyanobacteria and their toxins in various ways, which
can affect their growth, development, reproduction, survival (Palikova et al., 2007; Drobac
et al., 2016). Fish exposure to cyanotoxins can occur in two ways: by active introduction
through drinking and consuming of cyanobacterial cells and other organisms that have
accumulated cyanotoxins in their tissues, or by direct contact of the epithelial cells with
the surrounding water containing toxins (Palikova et al., 2007). Cyanotoxins can accumulate
in fish and other hydrobionts organs, and their consuming represent a potential risk to
human health.
Aphanocapsa, Aphanothece, Chroococcus, Chrysosporum, Cuspidothrix, Cylindrospermopsis,
Dolichospermum, Gloeocapsa, Leptolyngbya, Microcystis, Oscillatoria,
Phormidium, Planktolyngbya, Planktothrix, Pseudanabaena, Snowella i Woronichinia.
Marića bara, Potpeć, Prvonek, Savsko i Zvorničko jezero), srednjeg (Bojnik, Garaši i
Zaova) i visokog stepena (Vučkovica, Smoljinac, Srebrno jezero) opasnosti i zdravstvene
ugroženosti. U Srebrnom jezeru zabeležena je invazivna vrsta Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii,
čije širenje areala u Srbiji i često masovno umnožavanje nosi visok rizik po zajednice
vodenih organizama, a pre svega riba.
Prilikom pripreme Programa upravljanja ribolovnim vodama i predviđanja daljih aktivnosti
i biomanipulaciju adekvatnim ribljim vrstama.
ribolovaca) u cilju prepoznavanja potencijalnih rizika i preduzimanja mera kontinuiranog
monitoringa, i privremene ili trajne zabrane korišćenja voda, ukoliko rezultati pokažu visok
stepen rizika i opasnost po zdravlje.

AB - The Mlava springhead and the Krupaj springhead are protected areas located in the north-
eastern- Serbia. Both of them have been declared natural monuments and placed under the ll degree protection regime. Despite the great natural importance, these springheads have not been biologically researched enough. Algology research of these springheads were carried out in October 2Ot4 and August 2015. At the same time standard methods and significant physical-chemical parameters of water were followed. Sampling was conducted at three locality, which included itself spring heads and part of the brook near the springheads. The benthos and phytoplankton of area Mlava springhead had 56, while Krupaj springhead had 79 (respectively) of the following taxa: Cyanobacteria, Rhodophyta, Xanthophyta, Bacillariophyta, Chlorophyta and Phaeophyta. The Mlava springhead and the Krupaj springhead show differences in the diversity of algae. Unusual form of diatoms (Melosiro vorions) were recoreded along with the presence of rarely recorded type genera Batrachospermum, Porterinemo and Spirogyra. Direct and indirect anthropogenic influences contributing to changes in physical and chemical parameters of water (primarily an increase in the concentration of mineral salts) have been recorded in these habltats, threatening the presence of those rare algae species.

The Mlava springhead and the Krupaj springhead are protected areas located in the north-
eastern- Serbia. Direct and indirect anthropogenic influences contributing to changes in physical and chemical parameters of water (primarily an increase in the concentration of mineral salts) have been recorded in these habltats, threatening the presence of those rare algae species.",
