AB - We examined potential biological activities of two taxa of freshwater algae, Cladophora glomerata and Vaucheria sp., from Serbia. The total phenolic and pigment contents, antioxidant potential, antimicrobial, antibiofilm activities, and cytotoxicity of the ethanol and acetone extracts were evaluated. The extracts were also subjected to Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis. The levels of total phenolic compounds, chlorophylls a and b, and carotenoids varied based on both the algal taxa and the type of extracts. FTIR analysis showed the presence of lipids, unsaturated fatty acids, protein, carbohydrates, and phenols in the algal extracts. The extracts had moderate DPPH radical scavenging activity and lower reducing power compared with ascorbic acid. The antimicrobial activity expressed as minimum inhibitory concentrations ranged from 0.31 mg/mL to 10 mg/mL. The strains of Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus isolated from food samples, as well as S. aureus ATCC 25923, were the most sensitive. For the first time, the antibiofilm activity test revealed 98.7% inhibition of S. aureus biofilm formation. The extracts exhibited cytotoxic effects on choriocarcinoma JAR cells but without selectivity on normal fetal lung fibroblast MRC-5 cells. This is the first report on the biological activities of freshwater macroalgae from Serbia.

AB - In the Balkans, the production of globally cultivated green leaf lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) can be slow due to reduced quality and intensity of solar insolation. Our research aimed to investigate the effects of artificial illumination and the duration of light exposure on the growth and quality of two lettuce genotypes seedlings: Genesis and Jukebox. The research was conducted at the Institute for Vegetable Crops Smederevska Palanka, Serbia. Lettuce seeds were sown in 9 styrofoam containers per genotype, filled with commercial substrate. In the phase of three leaves, plants were placed in plant growth chambers under multispectral white (W) LEDs and monochromatic blue (B) LEDs (three containers per LED and genotype), while three containers were kept in the greenhouse and served as control. The plants were cultured in plant growth chambers for 25 days under a 9h/15h and 10h/14h (light/dark) photoperiod, to simulate outdoor conditions. Morphological growth parameters (number of leaves and plant weight) were measured on the 11th and 25th days. Chlorophyll content was measured on the 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th days. Plants grown under W and B LEDs had a significantly higher number of leaves, plant weight, and chlorophyll content than plants grown in a greenhouse. Using energy-efficient white and blue LED lights in lettuce seedling production during 18-25 days positively impacts seedling quality, and with this seedling production, the plants can achieve high yields and quality.

AB - Tomato, one of the most produced vegetables in the world, is experiencing continuous global increase in both production and consumption. Fruit quality traits are important for fresh market tomatoes as well as for the processing industry. Despite the growing demand for both fresh and processed tomatoes, consumers are not satisfied with the quality of available fruits. The main objectives of the present work were to determine the physicochemical characteristics [pH, total soluble solids (TSS), total titratable acids (TTA), TSS/TTA ratio, DMC, lycopene, β-carotene, vitamin C, and total phenolic content], as well as the antioxidant activity of 13 different tomato lines, and to identify the most promising ones in terms of fruit taste and quality. Antioxidant activity was determined using the ABTS and DPPH methods with Trolox used as the standard compound. PCA analysis was conducted to identify group patterns. The results of PCA analysis indicated a specific genotypic response in all investigated physicochemical traits. Genotypes 2, 10, and 13 were identified as the best for fresh consumption, as they exhibited the highest levels of compounds crucial for good taste, nutrition, and human health benefits. The most promising genotype related to fruit quality attributes was genotype 10 with the best TSS and TAA content and TSS/TAA ratio, which is important for overall taste perception. On the other hand, genotype 9 showed promise for industrial purposes due to its ideal pH value in the juice and good soluble solid content. High antioxidant activity was characteristic of genotypes 1 and 2, and their consumption as fresh tomatoes can be beneficial to human health. They also should be considered for further evaluation as potentially interesting genotypes for abiotic stress research and selection programs which can lead to the development of both superior fruit quality and stress tolerant genotypes.

AB - Pepper (Capsicum annuum L.), as one of the most important vegetable crops, requires continuous work on the selection of new varieties and hybrids with greater genetic potential for fertility, and the introduction of new cultivation technologies, all to satisfy human needs. In the f irst year of research, after crossing two parental components based on sterile lines, hybrid seeds of experimental hybrids were produced. A comparative experiment was set up in the greenhouse of the Institute for Vegetable Crops Smederevska Palanka in 2023 to create new pepper hybrids, which are characterized by fruits for different purposes. Of the seven experimental hybrid combinations, one is selected (LPK027 x HM6) for its potential morphological features (fruit weight and number of fruits per plant) as the main components of yield and high content of dry matter and was reported to the Commission for the Recognition of New Varieties in 2024 under the name Katja F1 .

AB - In the Balkans, the production of globally cultivated green leaf lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) can
be slow due to reduced quality and intensity of solar insolation. Our research aimed to investigate
the effects of artificial illumination and the duration of light exposure on the growth and quality
of two lettuce genotypes seedlings: Genesis and Jukebox. The research was conducted at the
Institute for Vegetable Crops Smederevska Palanka, Serbia. Lettuce seeds were sown in 9 styrofoam
containers per genotype, filled with commercial substrate. In the phase of three leaves, plants
were placed in plant growth chambers under multispectral white (W) LEDs and monochromatic
blue (B) LEDs (three containers per LED and genotype), while three containers were kept in
the greenhouse and served as control. The plants were cultured in plant growth chambers for
25 days under a 9h/15h and 10h/14h (light/dark) photoperiod, to simulate outdoor conditions.
Morphological growth parameters (number of leaves and plant weight) were measured on the 11th
and 25th days. Chlorophyll content was measured on the 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th days. Plants grown
under W and B LEDs had a significantly higher number of leaves, plant weight, and chlorophyll
content than plants grown in a greenhouse. Using energy-efficient white and blue LED lights in
lettuce seedling production during 18-25 days positively impacts seedling quality, and with this
seedling production, the plants can achieve high yields and quality.
kvaliteta i intenziteta sunčeve insolacije.
salate: Genesis i Jukebox.
i 25. dana.
gajenim u stakleniku. Upotreba energetski efikasnih belih i plavih LED svetiljki u proizvodnji
rasada zelene salate tokom 18-25 dana pozitivno utiče na kvalitet rasada, a biljke dobijene iz
ovakvog rasada mogu da ostvare visoke prinose i kvalitet.

AB - Bradyrhizobium japonicum bacteria on the intensity of nodulation during nine phenophases (R1-R7) in relation to the isoflavone content in soybean seeds. Nine domestic soybean varieties were sown in three replicates, with Bradyrhizobium japonicum inoculated and non-inoculated seeds. The different morphological characteristics of nodules, the number and mass of nodules were studied during plants’ ontogenesis. The content of individual isoflavones in the sowing seed material was determined using high performance liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS). The most abundant isoflavone was acetylgenistin in the variety Galeb (2741.4 μg/g), and the highest content of all isoflavones was recorded in the variety Gorštak (8117.7 μg/g). The variety Sava of the inoculated treatment exhibited the highest average values of the nodule mass (21.1 mg) and the highest number of nodules (23.3) in the phenophase, in which 10% of pods reached full length (R4). The average values of mass and number of nodules were calculated for the entire vegetation period, being higher in the inoculated treatment. There was no positive correlation between the content of isoflavones in seeds and the number and mass of nodules. The impact of quantity of isoflavone on nodulation intensity in soybeans was not significant,, which could be related to already saturated soil with nitrogen-fixing bacteria.

AB - Cabbage is a plant of low nutritional value with a high water content and a low content of dry matter and carbohydrates, predominantly sugars. In directing the breeding program of cabbage to increase its nutritional value, the Institute for Vegetable Crops in S. Palanka created a large number of lines from the population of Izpscc. These lines are characterized by a high sugar content ranging from 6.1% to 9.6%, compared to the world average of 3.8% to 4.2%. The selection process began with the method of individual selection from the population and continued with the Pedigree method. The basic selection criteria were: erectophilic rosette, leaves with long petioles that facilitate phototropism, internal stem shorter than 50% of the head height, total sugar content higher than 7.5%, well-compacted head, and head weight over 1.6 kg. To select the final genotype, a multi-year study on sugar stability was conducted, using AMMI analysis as a statistical method to assess the significance of genotype and environmental stability. The selection process was supported by the project "New variety of cabbage with increased yield and content of total sugars" funded by the Innovation Activity Fund, 2017 - 2018. The super sweet cabbage Zahar SP was recognized on the EU variety list on April 7, 2020, and was listed in the Republic of Serbia on July 28, 2020. International cooperation was achieved with the help of the Fund for Innovation Activities in collaboration with Syngenta. This collaboration focused on selecting supersweet cabbage hybrids resistant to biotic and abiotic stress. Numerous hybrids were developed by hybridizing DH lines of supersweet cabbage from the Institute for Vegetable Crops with stress-resistant CMS lines. Four hybrids were selected to begin the process of recognition in the EU variety list, with market realization expected from 2027. Economic teams will manage the commercialization plans and strategies for the global market.

abstract = "Cabbage is a plant of low nutritional value with a high water content and a low content of dry matter and carbohydrates, predominantly sugars. AB - One of the major challenges in the production of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) seedlings is to get quality seedlings, which can be difficult in conditions of low light. This paper aimed to study the effects of multispectral white and monochromatic blue light- emitting diodes (LEDs) lighting on development and chlorophyll content in Viola curly purple-leaf lettuce cultivar seedlings, compared to standard cultivation in greenhouses. The research was performed in December 2023/January-February 2024 at the Institute for Vegetable Crops Smederevska Palanka, Serbia. Seeds were sowed in containers filled with commercial substrate. In the phase of three leaves, six containers with plants were placed in phytochambers (three containers per LED), while three containers were kept in the greenhouse for control. Plants were cultured in phytochambers for 25 days with a 9/15 h and 10/14 h (light/dark) photoperiod, to simulate outdoor conditions. Morphological growth parameters were measured after 11 and 25 days, while chlorophyll content was measured after 4, 11, 18 and 25 days. Results of this study show that plants' morphological parameters and chlorophyll content were significantly influenced by LEDs. During lettuce cultivation in phytochambers, it is necessary to be cautious regarding lighting duration. Our results indicate that extended exposure to LEDs negatively affects Viola lettuce seedlings' development, leading to plant elongation and deformation. Such seedlings are not able to grow into healthy and quality plants. Additionally, extended artificial illumination affects one of the most advantageous traits of the Viola lettuce cultivar - purple leaves. Exposure to LEDs for more than 10 days leads to the loss of anthocyanin, and accordingly purple color in leaves. In order to produce quality seedlings, we recommend exposing Viola lettuce cultivar seedlings to monochromatic blue and multispectral white LEDs only for four and 10 days, respectively.

AB - The results are presented for black and white dairy cows with dominant participation of the Holstein genes on two commercial farms of Al Dahra Corporation (former PKB) with different husbandry systems. The method of description was used as a method in this research. This method shows the number of dairy cattle on Al Dahra’s farms in 2021/22/23. years, different housing systems, certain characteristics of milk yield and reproduction. The results are presented in the form of mean values of the observed parameters for each examined year. In the free housing system, during the three years of observation, a significantly higher number of dairy cows were raised compared to the bounded housing system (+2420; +1900 and +1825, respectively). The production and reproduction results were significantly better in dairy cows in the freestall system compared to the bounded housing system. A higher daily milk yield per head (29.0) was achieved compared to the bounded system (27.2), which resulted in a higher annual milk production - 6,889 l compared to 5,278 l., but the quality of the milk (3.6% milk fat and 3.25% protein) was the same for both presented housing systems. The duration of the service period of 127 days in the free system is significantly shorter than the duration of the service period in the bounded system (171 days). The free housing system also led to a lower insemination index for both cows (2.7) and heifers (1.9) compared to the other way of housing (3.8 for cows and 2.4 for heifers). In both Al Dahras farms, the age of dairy cow at the moment of excluding from production herd is on average 5 years for both husbandry systems, which significantly reduces the profitability of production. Housing system is a factor that strongly affects the welfare quality of dairy cows. In the management system of Al Dahra there is no monitoring, but it could be pointed out that the available investigations of housing system did not bring complete answer on all questions. However, based on this research we can recommend a free housing system with positive influence on the welfare of the animals.

AB - The answer to current and future breeding demands and goals in the production of food of animal origin is the breeding of autochthonous races of domestic animals. Given that the existence, preservation and sustainable use of the gene pool is crucial for the biodiversity of any country, the most important activities for our country are the management and preservation of genetic resources, both animal and plant. The subject of this paper is the presentation of the current state of a large number of autochthonous breeds of domestic animals in the Republic of Serbia, as the most important source of animal genetic resources. Statistical data from the Domestic Animal Diversity Information System (DAD-IS) in the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) were used in the paper. Numerous conditions of the cattle in the last two decades were analyzed and selection and breeding programs for the observed species were presented. Also, by applying qualitative research methods - the case study method and the description method, autochthonous species and breeds in the ethno village of Vila Jefimija were presented. Breeding of domestic mountain horses, Balkan donkeys, domestic cattle of the Busha breed, sheep race Pramenka and the local Vitoroga Žuja breed, as well as Balkan goats, poultry of the Kosovo singer breed on the farm of the ethno village of Vila Yefimija represents an impressive gene pool. However, the number of cultivated populations is small. The ethnic village of Villa Jefimija was presented as an impressive gene pool of Serbian autochthonous races in private property. This farm is an example of breeding practices for the preservation and presentation of genetic resources, which, given the analysis, leads to the conclusion that greater support and engagement of entities responsible for the implementation of the breeding program of autochthonous species and breeds of the Republic of Serbia is needed.

AB - The experiment was established in the experimental field at the experimental field in Leskovac (Serbia) during the three growing seasons. The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of genotype and environment on the yield of winter barley cultivars (Nonius, Bc Srećko and Bc Bosut). The following characteristics were analysed: grain yield, 1000 grain weight and test weight. The grain yield of winter barley significantly varied across years, from 3.463 t/ha in 2021/22 to 4.971 t/ha in 2020/21. The highest yield, 1000 grain weight and test weight in all barley varieties were in the first vegetation period with moderate temperatures at the time of grain filling and a large amount of precipitation. The average yield during the three-year trial, for all examined barley varieties in the study was 4.454 t/ha. The highest three-year average of grain yield (4.701 t/ha) were obtained by Nonius cultivar. The average 1000 grain weight in the study was 46.31 g. The test weight for all examined barley varieties in the study was 60.52 kg/hl.
Analysis of variance revealed a highly significant effect of the growing season on all studied traits of barley. A highly significant effect of genotype on 1000 grain weight was determined. Correlation coefficients showed large variations, which results from the interaction between the properties within each genotype and genotype interactions with environmental factors.

In the experiment, 6 maize hybrids of different vegetation lengths 400-600 were sown (ZP 434, NS 4023, ZP 555, NS 5051, ZP 666, NS 6030). The hybrid NS 6030 (10.248 t ha-1) had the highest average yield in 2014, while the hybrid FAO group 400 NS 4023 (9.467 t ha-1) had the lowest. The highest average yield in the year 2015, unfavorable for corn production, was achieved by the hybrid FAO group 400 ZP 434 (6.938 t ha-1) and the smallest yield by hybrid FAO group 600 NS 6030 (4.980 t ha-1). In 2015, being that the average temperatures were warmer than in 2014, and it had fewer amounts and worse distribution of precipitation, late sowing had a very bad effect on all hybrids, especially on FAO 600 hybrids.

AB - The influence of the developmental stage of zygotic embryos and the composition and pH of the Gamborg
induction medium B5 on the initiation and development of somatic embryos was investigated. The optimal medium
was B5 medium with a pH value of 5.0 and without plant growth regulator, at which the highest frequency of somatic
embryogenesis (56.67%) and the highest average number of somatic embryos per explant (3.35) were achieved. Somatic
embryos appeared directly on the hypocotyls of the explants, without the callus stage. On zygotic embryos in the early
cotyledonary phase, three times higher regeneration was achieved compared to larger embryos in the cotyledonary
phase. The induction of somatic embryogenesis did not occur during the growth of explants on the medium containinig
2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, nor on zygotic embryos in the late cotyledonary phase. Random amplified polymorphic
DNA analysis showed the genetic stability of somatic embryo-derived plants, which makes this newly established protocol
suitable for the regeneration and propagation of desirable broccoli genotypes.

AB - Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) is one of the most popular leafy vegetables used in human nutrition. Owing to its nutrient and mineral content, and high concentrations of vitamins and fibers, lettuce is considered as beneficial for human health. The short growing season makes lettuce convenient for growth in hydroponic systems. This paper aimed to study the effects of different mineral fertilizers on development and chlorophyll content in lettuce cultivated in controlled hydroponic systems. The research was carried out during January-February 2024 at the Institute for Vegetable Crops Smederevska Palanka, Serbia. The commercial lettuce cultivar ''Jukebox'' was cultivated for 30 days in a peat substrate, in a hydroponic system with artificial illumination. For lighting, light-emitting diodes (LEDs) were used. Plants were illuminated with multispectral white light (350-700 nm) at the temperature of 23 ± 2ºC and photoperiod of 8/16h (day/night). The experiment was set up in three replicates. The treatments were: Commercial fertilizer (CHF) intended for hydroponic production and soluble mineral fertilizer (SMF), applied in two different EC rates (1.5 and 2.5 mS/cm). For the first 15 days, the experiment was watered every day for 15 minutes, later watering was done twice a day for 15 minutes at intervals of ten hours. After 30 days of cultivation in a hydroponic system, growth parameters (fresh plant mass, above ground biomass and number of leaves) and chlorophyll content were measured. The CHF treatment significantly (p≤0.01) increased the mass of the plant (13.94g) comparing to SMF treatment (9.79g) The values of leaf chlorophyll content was significantly higher on the CHF treatment (26.43 SPAD) comparing to SMF treatment (22.18 SPAD) on the lower level of probability (p≤0.05). Nevertheless, the differences in mass and chlorophyll content indicate that the nutrients in CHF are better used compared to the SMF treatment especially at the 1.5 mS/cm EC level.

AB - Understanding how wheat genotypes respond to diverse environmental conditions is crucial in the face of climate change and varying agroecological factors, given that wheat is one of the world's most important crops, providing a significant portion of global food security. To address this, a study analyzed 27 wheat genotypes in solonetz (Kumane, Serbia) and chernozem (Rimski Šančevi, Serbia) soils over two growing seasons. The aim was to investigate how these genotypes perform in different soil types and under varying precipitation levels. It was found that increased soil alkalinity reduces spike weight and grain weight per spike, but proportionally, resulting in similar spike index values across different soil types (0.75 in chernozem and 0.73 in solonetz). The genotype Bankut 1205 had the highest spike index on solonetz (0.82), while the genotype Pesma exhibited the highest spike index on chernozem (0.89). In the season with lower precipitation (2017/2018), a higher spike index was recorded compared to the season with favorable precipitation (2015/2016), indicating plants directed more resources towards grain formation under drought stress. The genotype Pesma had the highest spike index in the 2015/2016 season (0.87), while the genotype Renesansa had the highest spike index in the 2017/2018 season (0.81). Chernozem soil exhibited higher stability, resulting in less variation in spike index values between seasons compared to solonetz soil. Differences in spike index values between different agroecological conditions may result from complex interactions between soil type, season, and plant tolerance to stress factors, with plants showing greater adaptation to drought. This study emphasizes the importance of studying spike index for better understanding wheat adaptability to changing environmental conditions.

AB - In recent years, in order to protect the environment and food safety, intensive work has been done on the development of biological fungicides, nematicides and herbicides, as well as products based on biological agents and medicinal herbs for plant protection. The aim of this research was to evaluate the effect of the application of Bacillus spp. and calendula extract on tomato yield. The experiment was carried out during the 2023 growing season in the field conditions using SP - 109 genotype of tomato, selected at the Institute for Vegetable Crops Smederevska Palanka. Tomato seedlings were produced in a greenhouse and were planted in the field at the end of May. The experiment was laid out in a random block system, with four replications. The number of plants per main plot was 36. The distance between the rows was 50 cm and between the plants in the row 25 cm. Five treatments were applied three times during the vegetable season (T1 - Bacillus spp. isolate 1, T2 - Bacillus spp. isolate 2, T3 - Calendula extract, T4 - Fungicide, T5 - Control). The number of fruits per plant in treatments T1 and T4 was 29. It was statistically significantly higher compared to the number of fruits per plant in treatments T2, T3 and T5 (20, 21, 20). Also, the fresh weight of fruits per plant was significantly higher in treatments T1 and T4 (847.7 and 868.5) compared to treatments T2, T3 and T5 (686.7, 680.4 and 634.4). Results of this investigation indicate that the application of biological agents, specifically selected Bacillus spp. isolate 1 (T1), can have effects comparable to fungicides, as evidenced by the achieved tomato yield. The future research will include investigations of the impact of Bacillus spp. isolates and calendula extract on the nutritional characteristics of tomato fruits.

AB - Genotype by environment interaction (GEI) is a complex problem that complicates the barley selection and breeding process. The knowledge of the relationship between cereal phenology and climatic data is important for understanding GEI and the physiological pathways responsible for the interaction effect. The grain yield of twenty winter barley genotypes in six environments was observed. Factors influencing the variability were analyzed using a linear mixed model. The partial least squares regression (PLSR) model was applied to determine the most relevant environmental variables in certain stages of development that explained GEI effects. Biplot with environmental variables explained 43.7% of the GEI. The barley was generally the most sensitive to the environmental conditions (relative humidity, maximum temperature and its variation, sun hours, and precipitation) during the anthesis and filling stage (May) which caused GEI. Temperature variables did not show significance only in the vegetative phase. Different genotypes responded differently to environmental factors. Genotypes NS-525, NS-589, and J-103 were highlighted as widely adaptable, and Zajeˇcar was a suitable and reliable location for yield testing. The GEI information presented in this paper can be useful in traditional plant breeding and future breeding programs through molecular research of crop developmental genes and examination of physiological processes in two-row barley.

AB - This study aimed to assess the ecological status/potential of the Čemernica and Dičina rivers (Zapadna Morava basin) based on epilithic diatoms and supporting physico-chemical parameters, as well as to explore indicative properties of the detected macroalgae. The sampling and analysis of benthic algae and measurement of physico-chemical parameters were carried out in August 2023. The ecological status/potential of the Čemernica River was poor to bad at all investigated sites (ČR1, ČR2, ČR3) based on diatom indices and physico-chemical parameters. Low diatom indices values and the presence of the macroalgae Stigeoclonium tenue indicated organic pollution. In the Dičina River, good ecological status was assessed at all sites (DR1-DR4) based on the diatom indices, while poor ecological status has been assessed at almost all sites (DR1, DR2, DR3) based on the physico-chemical parameters, except at DR4, where the ecological status was good. The high coverage of Cladophora glomerata in both rivers indicated nutrient loading, which aligned with the results of the physico-chemical parameters.

AB - The main goal of our study was to find an optimal combination of tested factors to achieve
lettuce rich in bioactive compounds sustaining its pleasant taste. We examined three red and three
green cultivars in a greenhouse using two microbiological fertilisers (EM Aktiv and Vital Tricho), and
their combination. Plants were grown in three consecutive growing seasons (autumn, winter, and
spring). Lactones accumulated in autumn, whereas phenolics’ concentration rose during winter. Red cultivars showed higher phenolics and lactone content, where chicoric acid and luteolin-7-glucoside were the most abundant in the ‘Gaugin’ winter trial. Lactucopicrin was the predominant lactone among tested cultivars with the highest value in the red cultivar ‘Carmesi’. Solely applicated, the fertiliser EM Aktiv and Vital Tricho led to significantly higher phenolic acid and dihydrolactucopicrin
content, while combined, there were notably increased levels of all detected lactones. Application
of single fertilisers had no effect on flavonoid content, while the combination even reduced it. A
sensory analysis showed a negative correlation between overall taste and total sesquiterpene lactones, lactucopicrin, caffeoylmalic, and chlorogenic acid, indicating a less bitter taste with decreasing content of these compounds. Our findings indicate that the cultivar, fertiliser, and growing season jointly affected all of the tested parameters, highlighting the differences in the application of EM Aktiv, Vital Tricho, and their combination.

AB - The accumulation of heavy metals in the environment is one of the most significant environmental problems due to the potential risk to human and animal health. The aim of this study was to analyze the influence of the distance from the industrial zone on the heavy metal content in the soil and vegetative parts of wheat. A field experiment with four wheat genotypes was conducted in the area of the city of Pancevo, Serbia, at three locations at different distances from the industrial zone. By atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS), concentrations of five heavy metals (Zn, Pb, Cr, Cu, and Cd) were determined in the soil and wheat. The highest total content of Zn, Cr, Cu, and Cd in the soil (72.5, 27.3, 26.2, and 0.3 mg kg−1, respectively) was found at the location closest to the industrial zone, while the highest content of Pb (28.9 mg kg−1) was recorded at a location that is in the immediate vicinity of a road. Heatmap correlations and PCA analysis show a significant relationship between the content of heavy metals in the soil and the plant. Genotype Pobeda had the lowest content of Cr, Cu, and Cd in the root and the lowest content of all the analyzed heavy metals in the stem. The highest translocation factor of heavy metals was found in the genotype Apache, which had the highest content of Pb, Cr, and Cu in the stem. The highest heavy metal bioaccumulation and translocation were established for Cd content (0.86 and 1.93). The obtained results indicate a potential ecological risk in the immediate vicinity of the industrial zone, while the difference in the accumulation of heavy metals between the studied genotypes opens new aspects for breeding programs.

istraživanja utvrdi uticaj hibrida različitih FAO grupa zrenja i klimatskih
prilika na prinos zrna kukuruza. Ispitivanja su obavljena tokom 2014. i
2015. godine na teritoriji opštine Leskovac. U ogledu je bilo zastupljeno 6 hibrida kukuruza (ZP 434, NS 4023, ZP 555, NS 5051, ZP 666, NS 6030),
koji su zasejani sredinom aprila. Ogled je zasnovan po slučajnom blok
sistemu, u tri ponavljanja.
AB - Maize (Zea mays L.) is a very important field crop in the Republic of Serbia and the world, with the tendency of further expansion of production
area and market importance. The success of stable production depends to
a large extent on the level of applied agricultural techniques and skill in the selection of hybrids, as well as weather conditions during the production
process. The goal of the research was to determine the influence of hybrids
of different FAO ripening groups and climatic conditions on the grain yield of corn during two years of research. The tests were carried out in 2014
and 2015 in the territory of the municipality of Leskovac. The trial included 6 maize hybrids (ZP 434, NS 4023, ZP 555, NS 5051, ZP 666,
NS 6030), which were sown in mid-April. The experiment was based on a randomized block system, with three replications. The influence of hybrids of different FAO ripening groups and different agro-ecological conditions
on corn grain yield was very pronounced. The highest average yield in
2014 was achieved by hybrid NS 6030 (11,068 kg ha-1), while the lowest yield in 2015 was achieved by the same hybrid (6,443 kg ha-1). The yields
achieved in 2014 for all tested hybrids were significantly higher than the
yields in 2015.
