AB - BACKGROUND: and objectives Quinoa is considered to be a "natural functional food" due to a lot of bioactive compounds that are beneficial for human health by helping prevent the risks of different diseases. The aim of this study was to test the health-promoting characteristics of Puno and Titicaca quinoa seeds grown in Serbia by assessing their phenolic and flavonoid content, antioxidant activities, and potential anticancer effect on human colorectal cancer cells. Findings Thirteen phenolic compounds were identified and quantified in the seeds of both cultivars, but their profile and concentration of individual phenolic compounds differed. Cytotoxic activities were present in both cultivars, whereas the pronounced concentration and time-dependent effects were more expressed in Puno extracts. Conclusions The extracts of the seeds of both cultivars are a rich source of phenolic and flavonoid compounds and with high antioxidant activities. Potent anticancer activity against the human colorectal cancer was expressed in both investigated cultivars. Significance and novelty The study confirmed the health benefit potential of Puno and Titicaca quinoa cultivars, grown in Serbia. These results are the first to demonstrate a potent anticancer activity of quinoa seed extract against the human colorectal cancer cell line HCT-116, as well as the presence of 7 new phenolic and flavonoid compounds.

AB - Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) is considered as a very important agricultural crop due
to its nutritional value and tolerance to different stress factors. The aim of this study was to
investigate the differences in yield, the content of starch and protein in the seed of two
introduced genotypes of quinoa (Puno and Titicaca) and the possibility of their cultivation in
Serbian agroecological conditions. The experiment was carried out during the 2017 growing
season in the rain-fed condition in Subotica, Republic of Serbia. The seeds were sowed in the
first part of April. Sowing was done at a depth of 2 centimeters, the distance between the rows
was 50 cm and between the plants in the row 5 cm. The crops were harvested in the first half
of August when quinoa seeds were mature and the amount of moisture in seed was 12%. The
harvest of Puno and Titicaca seeds was made by hand. The content of crude proteins was
determined according to the Kjeldahl method, while for starch measurement the Ewers
polarimetric method was used. Obtained results showed that the yield of plants Titicaca
genotype (24.4 g/plant) was higher compared to the yield of plants Puno genotype (21.3
g/plant). Our results did not show significantly different values in protein content between the
seeds of Puno (14.1%) and Titicaca (14.0%). Also, the seeds of Titicaca and Puno contained
similar starch content (54.1 and 55.6%, respectively). These results indicate that both
investigation genotypes can be grown in Serbian agroecological conditions.

AB - The aim of this study was to investigate the quinoa fruit and seed microstructure, as well as to determine the qualitative composition of quinoa whole seed spatial localisation of food reserves in cultivars Puno and Titicaca using two complementary spectroscopic techniques (Fourier Transform infrared and Raman). The analyses of the seeds also included measurements of the crude proteins and starch contents. The experiment was carried out during the 2016 growing season in rain-fed conditions in the north of Serbia. The analysis of the scores of the principal components based on the Raman spectra revealed two groups in both seed parts (cotyledons and perisperm). The analysis of the loadings highlighted the spectrum region that contributed to the differentiation, e.g. the band at 472 cm(-1) was related to the amylopectin content in the perisperm region. As for the cotyledons, the spectral range from 1100 to 1650 cm(-1) was responsible for genotype differences and it included both the most important bands derived from Amide I, II and quinoa protein with globoid crystals composed of phytin. IR analysis, similar to the analyses of the crude proteins and starch contents in the seeds, failed to reveal any differences in biochemical composition between two analyzed genotypes.

AB - The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of long term moderate drought stress on fruit yield and quality of four parents of the MAGIC TOM population and to gain insight into the differences in sensitivity to drought between large fruited and cherry tomatoes. Results showed that long term water deficit had a negative effect on fresh mass and fruit diameter that were more expressed in cherry tomatoes than in large fruited ones. Long term moderate water deficit can improve fruit taste in large fruited tomato genotypes by active metabolic accumulation of soluble sugar and organic acid (sucrose and citric acid), which are also osmotic active compounds. The reduction in fruit growth of cherry tomatoes compared to large fruits could be compensated for by improving fruit nutritional value (ascorbic acid, carotenoids and antioxidant activity) through both concentration and metabolic responses.

AB - Током 2016. и 2017.
AB - During 2016 and 2017, we carried out experiments with introduced varieties of quinoa Puno and Titicaca in Subotica, Republic of Serbia. In 2016 the experimental seeds were planted in two densities (5 and 10 cm), and in 2017 in three densities (2,5 and 10 cm). Both varieties yielded a stable yield. The humid 2016 year was more favourable to the low-density plants, while the dry season of 2017 was more favourable to the more densely planted quinoa. With larger quantities of rainfall, the Puno variety is higher yielding, and on average it produced 59 g of dry seed per plant. Under drier conditions there was no significant difference in the yield of these two varieties.

AB - This study was undertaken to investigate the possibilities for breeding drought tolerant tomatoes of different growth type and fruit size. The effects of drought were analyzed and the relationships among the observed traits at optimal irrigation and drought were interpreted using biplot analysis. Greenhouse pot experiment included 40 tomato accessions grown under optimal irrigation and drought (volumetric soil water content 35.0% and 20.9%), designed in complete randomized blocks. Observations were made at the intensive vegetative growth phase. The selection criterion for drought tolerance was plant dry weight. The accessions differed in: the whole plant, shoot and root dry weight, root proportion in plant dry weight (RP), plant height, number of leaves below the first flower branches (NL), number of lateral branches, and the first and second order lateral branches length. Drought resulted in significant decline, with the exceptions of the increased RP and NL. Determinate and indeterminate tomatoes were not significantly different in drought tolerance, implying that both types may be bred for tolerance to the stress; however, the accessions of larger fruit size had comparatively higher water requirements. Results of the biplot analysis indicated that drought tolerance in tomato does not necessarily have to be associated with robust root system and therefore the indirect selection strategy may rely on shoot traits.

AB - The aim of this study was to examine the content of total soluble solids, organic acids and lycopene in fruits of different tomato genotypes grown in organic production. Four different genotypes (Volovsko heart Red cherry, Tigrella and Viva) were used during this experiment. The quality of tomato fruits was analyzed based on the measurement of total soluble solids, organic acids and lycopene in fresh weight of the fruit. The values obtained for the analyzed parameters of fruit quality were as follows: total soluble solids 4.98, 5.26, 5.28 and 4.70 (° Brix), organic acids 160.67, 110.34, 132.77 and 116 (citric acid µmol g-1 FW), lycopene, 8.22, 5.70, 7.61, 9.21 (mg kg-1 FW) in genotypes Volovsko srce, Red cherry, Tigrella and Viva. Oscillations in the obtained parameters, especially in the content of lycopene in different genotypes were probably the result of genetic resources, but also the influence of abiotic factors.

AB - Because of its specific biochemical and molecular properties and nutrient importance, tomato
(Solanum lycopersicum) is an established model to study fruit growth and development. This review
paper addresses several aspects of tomato fruit growth and development including its specific
phases, control by water regime, cell wall enzymes, plant hormones and metabolic processes.

Germination of tomatoes under PEG-induced drought stress

AB - The aims of this study were: to assess the effects of drought stress on germination percentage, germination energy and number of days to complete germination in fifteen tomato populations; to distinguish the treatment that is the most suitable for classifying the tomatoes for their response to early-imposed drought; as well as to distinguish populations which could be used for breeding tolerant varieties. The experiment included control germination assay (distilled water) and the increasing (4, 8, and 12%, w/v) polyethylene glycol (PEG) treatments. Both germination percentage and energy considerably decreased with the increasing PEG treatments, while the observed average increase in the number of days required to complete germination remained statistically insignificant. The differences in germination among the populations were most pronounced in 12% PEG treatment, which is therefore recommended for further research. Several populations are indicated as tolerant; however, tomato drought tolerance exhibited as early as at the germination stage does not necessarily indicate the tolerance in later phases of plant development. The population 105 is recommended for breeding drought tolerant varieties.

AB - This research was conducted with the aim to among forty-one tested tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill) populations distinguish those tolerant to limited water supply. Tolerance assessments were performed by using sixteen drought stress selection indices calculated on the basis of tomato shoot and root dry weight yields determined at water stress and non-stress conditions. Populations were differentiated in groups using the method of cluster analysis. The pot experiment was set in controlled greenhouse conditions and comprised optimally irrigated control and drought treatment (35.0 and 20.9% volumetric soil water content, respectively), imposed at the phase of intensive vegetative growth. The experiment was conducted at the Institute for Vegetable Crops in Smederevska Palanka, Serbia. The analyzed tomatoes exhibited significant differences in terms of response to limited irrigation, which had more pronounced effect on shoot dry weight than on the roots (average decrease of 64.4 and 35.7%, respectively). Consequently, root fraction in the total dry weight increased at drought for 68.2% on average. Shoot and root dry weights were positively correlated at optimal irrigation but not in drought, implying genotypic differences in terms of root adjustments to stress conditions. As for the calculated selection indices, substantial variation was found among the populations enabling their ranking in terms of drought tolerance. Since ranking was not the same in all cases, clustering the populations was performed taking into account all sixteen selection indices. The results of this analysis indicate that populations designated with numbers 126, 124, 131, 125, 128, 105, 101, 138, 110, 132 and 109 in Institute for Vegetable Crops germplasm collection exhibit satisfactory level of drought tolerance at vegetative phase and therefore may be used as parents in breeding programs.

AB - This study was aimed to assess drought tolerance in twelve tomato populations collected in the territory of Serbia and to investigate relationships and repeatability among sixteen drought tolerance indices. Drought tolerance was estimated at the stage of intensive vegetative growth, on the basis of dry weight yield determined at optimal and limited irrigation (volumetric soil water content of 35.0 and 20.9%, respectively). The trial was set in pots placed in the greenhouse. Significant differences were found among populations in terms of all considered parameters; populations G125, G105 and G104 performed well in both irrigation regimes. High repeatability was found between the selection indices TOL and SSPI, STI and GMP, DWdr and YI, and among SI, SSI, RDI, SDI and RD. Principal component analysis allows simultaneous evaluation of populations and interpretation of interrelationships among the indices; it may be recommended as a method of choice for data analysis in further studies on drought tolerance in tomato.

AB - Investigation comprised 41 tomato genotypes originating from the population of domestic and domesticated genotypes collected in Serbia and belonging to the tomato collection of the Institute of Vegetable Crop Science, Smederevska Palanka. The aim of collection screening was to choose the genotypes tolerant to drought during plant intensive growth stage, whereby the process of selection would set out to obtain the recombinant genotypes for this abiotic factor. The screening criteria were established for genotype divergence in plant height and shoot-root ratio under conditions of optimal irrigation regime and drought. Divergence was estimated using cluster analysis with Euclidean distance as a measure of distance, with a complete gene attachment to grouping. Drought tolerance is expressed by the stress susceptibility index (SSI). Various results were obtained based on the screening of genotypes grown under optimal and dry conditions. As a measure of stress susceptibility, based on SSI, genotypes having different drought tolerance level were determined. On the grounds of the analyses carried out, 10 genotypes were segregated (G102, G104, G107, G109, G110, G119, G125, G126, G128 and G141) to represent a basis to obtain the recombinant genotypes and to initiate the selection for drought resistance.

AB - The effects of partial root-zone drying (PRD) on tomato fruit growth and proteome in the pericarp of cultivar Ailsa Craig were investigated. The PRD treatment was 70% of water applied to fully irrigated (FI) plants. PRD reduced the fruit number and slightly increased the fruit diameter, whereas the total fruit fresh weight (FW) and dry weight (DW) per plant did not change. Although the growth rate was higher in FI than in PRD fruits, the longer period of cell expansion resulted in bigger PRD fruits. Proteins were extracted from pericarp tissue at two fruit growth stages (15 and 30 days post-anthesis [dpa]), and submitted to proteomic analysis including two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and mass spectrometry for identification. Proteins related to carbon and amino acid metabolism indicated that slower metabolic flux in PRD fruits may be the cause of a slower growth rate compared to FI fruits. The increase in expression of the proteins related to cell wall, energy, and stress defense could allow PRD fruits to increase the duration of fruit growth compared to FI fruits. Upregulation of some of the antioxidative enzymes during the cell expansion phase of PRD fruits appears to be related to their role in protecting fruits against the mild stress induced by PRD.
