AB - Liming of acidic soils is associated with various processes in the soil, including the availability of nutrients for plants. The vector and extent of these changes depend, inter alia, on the type of lime material and the doses used. Particularly, excessive liming can trigger a deficiency of manganese for crops. A long-term microfield experiment (13 test years) was carried out on Albic Retisols reclaimed with the dolomite particles of various sizes as a by-product of stone processing quarries. Ten treatments including various sized dolomite particles and their combinations, as well as traditional limestone flour on the background of NPK fertilizer were studied for the changes in soil acidity indicators (exchangeable acidity, pH; hydrolytic acidity, Hy; total acidity, Htot) and manganese availability. The amount of acidic components passing into the extract of 1N KCl was insufficient to reveal a dependency between the exchangeable acidity and the content of mobile manganese in the soil of most treatments limed with dolomite particles of various sizes. However, the relationship between the content of mobile Mn in soils and the value of hydrolytic acidity was proved by paired linear regressions. Regardless of the dose and size of dolomite particles added, the soil was highly and moderately supplied with plant available manganese during the entire study period.

AB - We examined potential biological activities of two taxa of freshwater algae, Cladophora glomerata and Vaucheria sp., from Serbia. The total phenolic and pigment contents, antioxidant potential, antimicrobial, antibiofilm activities, and cytotoxicity of the ethanol and acetone extracts were evaluated. The extracts were also subjected to Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis. The levels of total phenolic compounds, chlorophylls a and b, and carotenoids varied based on both the algal taxa and the type of extracts. FTIR analysis showed the presence of lipids, unsaturated fatty acids, protein, carbohydrates, and phenols in the algal extracts. The extracts had moderate DPPH radical scavenging activity and lower reducing power compared with ascorbic acid. The antimicrobial activity expressed as minimum inhibitory concentrations ranged from 0.31 mg/mL to 10 mg/mL. The strains of Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus isolated from food samples, as well as S. aureus ATCC 25923, were the most sensitive. For the first time, the antibiofilm activity test revealed 98.7% inhibition of S. aureus biofilm formation. The extracts exhibited cytotoxic effects on choriocarcinoma JAR cells but without selectivity on normal fetal lung fibroblast MRC-5 cells. This is the first report on the biological activities of freshwater macroalgae from Serbia.

AB - The results are presented for black and white dairy cows with dominant participation of the Holstein genes on two commercial farms of Al Dahra Corporation (former PKB) with different husbandry systems. The method of description was used as a method in this research. This method shows the number of dairy cattle on Al Dahra’s farms in 2021/22/23. years, different housing systems, certain characteristics of milk yield and reproduction. The results are presented in the form of mean values of the observed parameters for each examined year. In the free housing system, during the three years of observation, a significantly higher number of dairy cows were raised compared to the bounded housing system (+2420; +1900 and +1825, respectively). The production and reproduction results were significantly better in dairy cows in the freestall system compared to the bounded housing system. A higher daily milk yield per head (29.0) was achieved compared to the bounded system (27.2), which resulted in a higher annual milk production - 6,889 l compared to 5,278 l., but the quality of the milk (3.6% milk fat and 3.25% protein) was the same for both presented housing systems. The duration of the service period of 127 days in the free system is significantly shorter than the duration of the service period in the bounded system (171 days). The free housing system also led to a lower insemination index for both cows (2.7) and heifers (1.9) compared to the other way of housing (3.8 for cows and 2.4 for heifers). In both Al Dahras farms, the age of dairy cow at the moment of excluding from production herd is on average 5 years for both husbandry systems, which significantly reduces the profitability of production. Housing system is a factor that strongly affects the welfare quality of dairy cows. In the management system of Al Dahra there is no monitoring, but it could be pointed out that the available investigations of housing system did not bring complete answer on all questions. However, based on this research we can recommend a free housing system with positive influence on the welfare of the animals.

AB - The answer to current and future breeding demands and goals in the production of food of animal origin is the breeding of autochthonous races of domestic animals. Given that the existence, preservation and sustainable use of the gene pool is crucial for the biodiversity of any country, the most important activities for our country are the management and preservation of genetic resources, both animal and plant. The subject of this paper is the presentation of the current state of a large number of autochthonous breeds of domestic animals in the Republic of Serbia, as the most important source of animal genetic resources. Statistical data from the Domestic Animal Diversity Information System (DAD-IS) in the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) were used in the paper. Numerous conditions of the cattle in the last two decades were analyzed and selection and breeding programs for the observed species were presented. Also, by applying qualitative research methods - the case study method and the description method, autochthonous species and breeds in the ethno village of Vila Jefimija were presented. Breeding of domestic mountain horses, Balkan donkeys, domestic cattle of the Busha breed, sheep race Pramenka and the local Vitoroga Žuja breed, as well as Balkan goats, poultry of the Kosovo singer breed on the farm of the ethno village of Vila Yefimija represents an impressive gene pool. However, the number of cultivated populations is small. The ethnic village of Villa Jefimija was presented as an impressive gene pool of Serbian autochthonous races in private property. This farm is an example of breeding practices for the preservation and presentation of genetic resources, which, given the analysis, leads to the conclusion that greater support and engagement of entities responsible for the implementation of the breeding program of autochthonous species and breeds of the Republic of Serbia is needed.

AB - Conventional food production has led to a number of problems in the environment, especially soil degradation. The sustainable method of production is also acceptable for rural areas. The goal of the work was to determine the dynamics of changes in the abundance of significant groups of microorganisms in the maize rhizosphere after the application of preparations with effective microorganisms. The experiment was set up in 2018 in the Mačva region. There were three in the research: A: different amounts of mineral nitrogen 160 and 120 kgˑNha-1, B: three hybrids ZP 427, ZP 548 and ZP 648 and factor C treatment with effective microorganisms in the preparation EM Aktiv. The preparation was applied to the soil before sowing at 20 lˑha-1 and twice during the growing season at 6 lˑha-1. The total number of microbes (107) and the number of fungi (104) were determined as important parameters that are important for acidic soils. Agroecological conditions were relatively optimal, while agrochemical analyzes of the soil showed that the soil had an acidic reaction. In such conditions, the application of EM technology had positive results on the examined parameters. The tested factors had a statistically significant effect on the number of tested groups of microbes compared to the control. The number of examined parameters was higher at 120 kg Nˑha-1 and in the rhizosphere of hybrid ZP 427. Treatment with EM did not have a statistically significant effect on the increase of nitrogen content in the grains of the examined hybrids.

AB - The experiment was established in the experimental field at the experimental field in Leskovac (Serbia) during the three growing seasons. The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of genotype and environment on the yield of winter barley cultivars (Nonius, Bc Srećko and Bc Bosut). The following characteristics were analysed: grain yield, 1000 grain weight and test weight. The grain yield of winter barley significantly varied across years, from 3.463 t/ha in 2021/22 to 4.971 t/ha in 2020/21. The highest yield, 1000 grain weight and test weight in all barley varieties were in the first vegetation period with moderate temperatures at the time of grain filling and a large amount of precipitation. The average yield during the three-year trial, for all examined barley varieties in the study was 4.454 t/ha. The highest three-year average of grain yield (4.701 t/ha) were obtained by Nonius cultivar. The average 1000 grain weight in the study was 46.31 g. The test weight for all examined barley varieties in the study was 60.52 kg/hl.
Analysis of variance revealed a highly significant effect of the growing season on all studied traits of barley. A highly significant effect of genotype on 1000 grain weight was determined. Correlation coefficients showed large variations, which results from the interaction between the properties within each genotype and genotype interactions with environmental factors.

AB - One of the major challenges in the production of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) seedlings is to get quality seedlings, which can be difficult in conditions of low light. This paper aimed to study the effects of multispectral white and monochromatic blue light- emitting diodes (LEDs) lighting on development and chlorophyll content in Viola curly purple-leaf lettuce cultivar seedlings, compared to standard cultivation in greenhouses. The research was performed in December 2023/January-February 2024 at the Institute for Vegetable Crops Smederevska Palanka, Serbia. Seeds were sowed in containers filled with commercial substrate. In the phase of three leaves, six containers with plants were placed in phytochambers (three containers per LED), while three containers were kept in the greenhouse for control. Plants were cultured in phytochambers for 25 days with a 9/15 h and 10/14 h (light/dark) photoperiod, to simulate outdoor conditions. Morphological growth parameters were measured after 11 and 25 days, while chlorophyll content was measured after 4, 11, 18 and 25 days. Results of this study show that plants' morphological parameters and chlorophyll content were significantly influenced by LEDs. During lettuce cultivation in phytochambers, it is necessary to be cautious regarding lighting duration. Our results indicate that extended exposure to LEDs negatively affects Viola lettuce seedlings' development, leading to plant elongation and deformation. Such seedlings are not able to grow into healthy and quality plants. Additionally, extended artificial illumination affects one of the most advantageous traits of the Viola lettuce cultivar - purple leaves. Exposure to LEDs for more than 10 days leads to the loss of anthocyanin, and accordingly purple color in leaves. In order to produce quality seedlings, we recommend exposing Viola lettuce cultivar seedlings to monochromatic blue and multispectral white LEDs only for four and 10 days, respectively.

AB - One of the most cultivated agricultural plants is certainly wheat, which is dominantly used for human nutrition in all parts of the world. The irrational use of large amounts of pesticides and mineral fertilizers negatively affects the quality of agricultural land, the environment, the quality of food and human health. The development of new cultivation technologies and the increasing use of microbiological preparations can have a positive impact on the environment. In accordance with world trends, requirements are set for agricultural production aimed at reducing synthetic agents in order to preserve the environment, produce health-safe and economically profitable food. With the development of new cultivation technologies, where the emphasis is on the reduced use of mineral fertilizers in the production of wheat, the application of microbiological fertilizers is becoming more frequent. As material for research in 2016 and 2018, two varieties of wheat selected in domestic institutions and two varieties in French selection houses were used. The varieties used for the research are: PKB Ratarica, Pobeda, Nogal and Apache. The experiment was conducted on the experimental plots of the Institute for Agro-Economics PKB in Padinska Skela. Before sowing wheat, 400 kg ha-1 NPK formulation 15:15:15 was applied to the soil. In the spring sowing of wheat, UREA 46% N was used in different amounts according to the treatments. A microbiological preparation with effective microorganisms was used as supplement. The results of the research showed that wheat had the best yield in the T3 treatment with an average yield of 6.47 t ha-1. The aim of the research is to determine the significant influence of different amounts of mineral and microbiological fertilizers on the production properties as well as on the chemical properties of the grains in different genotypes of wheat.

AB - Two-year research was carried out in 2014 and 2015 on the territory of the municipality of Leskovac, on alluvium land type. In the experiment, 6 maize hybrids of different vegetation lengths 400-600 were sown (ZP 434, NS 4023, ZP 555, NS 5051, ZP 666, NS 6030). The hybrid NS 6030 (10.248 t ha-1) had the highest average yield in 2014, while the hybrid FAO group 400 NS 4023 (9.467 t ha-1) had the lowest. The highest average yield in the year 2015, unfavorable for corn production, was achieved by the hybrid FAO group 400 ZP 434 (6.938 t ha-1) and the smallest yield by hybrid FAO group 600 NS 6030 (4.980 t ha-1). In 2015, being that the average temperatures were warmer than in 2014, and it had fewer amounts and worse distribution of precipitation, late sowing had a very bad effect on all hybrids, especially on FAO 600 hybrids.

AB - The field study was conducted during 2014, 2016 and 2017 at the Agriculture school in Leskovac. Six maize hybrids from three different maturity groups were planted, two from each group. FAO400 group included ZP434 and NS4023, FAO500 included ZP555 as well as NS5051 and FAO600 included ZP 666 and NS 6030. Maize was planted on april 15th in each year at three planting densities 71429 (70 × 20 cm), 57143 (70 × 25 cm) and 47619 plants per hectare 70 × 30 cm). The plant height and first cob height varied in all three years among hybrids and planting densities. Among hybrids ZP666 was in average the highest with 262.64 cm while NS4023 was in average the smallest in all planting densities with and average height of 227.32 cm. The highest first cob was noticed on NS6030 and presented 112.65 cm while the lowest was measured on NS4023 with 108.96 cm far from the soil. All three years were different, whereby 2014 had the most precipitation followed by 2016 and 2017 respectivly. In all three years the highest plants and cobs were noticed in the highest planting density and vice versa. The goal of this study was to see the variation of these two growing parameters for each of these six maize hybrids planted in three different densities among years.

embryogenesis (56.67%) and the highest average number of somatic embryos per explant (3.35) were achieved. Somatic
embryos appeared directly on the hypocotyls of the explants, without the callus stage. On zygotic embryos in the early
cotyledonary phase, three times higher regeneration was achieved compared to larger embryos in the cotyledonary
phase. The induction of somatic embryogenesis did not occur during the growth of explants on the medium containinig
2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, nor on zygotic embryos in the late cotyledonary phase. Random amplified polymorphic
DNA analysis showed the genetic stability of somatic embryo-derived plants, which makes this newly established protocol
suitable for the regeneration and propagation of desirable broccoli genotypes.

AB - Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) is one of the most popular leafy vegetables used in human nutrition. Owing to its nutrient and mineral content, and high concentrations of vitamins and fibers, lettuce is considered as beneficial for human health. The short growing season makes lettuce convenient for growth in hydroponic systems. This paper aimed to study the effects of different mineral fertilizers on development and chlorophyll content in lettuce cultivated in controlled hydroponic systems. The research was carried out during January-February 2024 at the Institute for Vegetable Crops Smederevska Palanka, Serbia. The commercial lettuce cultivar ''Jukebox'' was cultivated for 30 days in a peat substrate, in a hydroponic system with artificial illumination. For lighting, light-emitting diodes (LEDs) were used. Plants were illuminated with multispectral white light (350-700 nm) at the temperature of 23 ± 2ºC and photoperiod of 8/16h (day/night). The experiment was set up in three replicates. The treatments were: Commercial fertilizer (CHF) intended for hydroponic production and soluble mineral fertilizer (SMF), applied in two different EC rates (1.5 and 2.5 mS/cm). For the first 15 days, the experiment was watered every day for 15 minutes, later watering was done twice a day for 15 minutes at intervals of ten hours. After 30 days of cultivation in a hydroponic system, growth parameters (fresh plant mass, above ground biomass and number of leaves) and chlorophyll content were measured. The CHF treatment significantly (p≤0.01) increased the mass of the plant (13.94g) comparing to SMF treatment (9.79g) The values of leaf chlorophyll content was significantly higher on the CHF treatment (26.43 SPAD) comparing to SMF treatment (22.18 SPAD) on the lower level of probability (p≤0.05). Nevertheless, the differences in mass and chlorophyll content indicate that the nutrients in CHF are better used compared to the SMF treatment especially at the 1.5 mS/cm EC level.

AB - The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of fertilization on the quality and yield of sweet corn. The influence of fertilization on cob length and diameter on yield and yield components was investigated. The trial was conducted on the premises of the maize research institute "Zemun Polje". Two genotypes of sweet maize grown (ZP 355su and ZP 4118). The first tillage and basic fertilization were carried out in autumn. The second fertilization consisted of a combination of basic fertilization and microbiological seed treatment, while the third fertilization consisted of a combination of the first two fertilizations and foliar fertilization. There was no statistically significant difference in cob length between the observed genotypes, indicating that fertilization had no significant effect on this trait. However, a statistically very significant difference in cob diameter was observed between the genotypes. The first genotype had a higher mean value of 5.22 cm, while the second genotype had a mean value of 4.82 cm. The interaction of genotype and fertilization significantly influenced the piston diameter. There was no statistically significant difference in yield components between genotype and fertilization. However, the genotype had a statistically very significant effect on yield, while the effect of fertilization was not statistically significant. The first genotype gave better results with 9.20 t/ha than the second genotype with 7.09 t/ha. Considering that yield is the most important component in sweet corn cultivation, it was found that the genotype ZP 355su, a hybrid with shorter vegetation, gave a better yield compared to the hybrid ZP 4118su. In addition, it was found that the interaction of genotype and fertilization in this case had an effect on cob diameter, but not on yield, yield components and cob length.

AB - Understanding how wheat genotypes respond to diverse environmental conditions is crucial in the face of climate change and varying agroecological factors, given that wheat is one of the world's most important crops, providing a significant portion of global food security. To address this, a study analyzed 27 wheat genotypes in solonetz (Kumane, Serbia) and chernozem (Rimski Šančevi, Serbia) soils over two growing seasons. The aim was to investigate how these genotypes perform in different soil types and under varying precipitation levels. It was found that increased soil alkalinity reduces spike weight and grain weight per spike, but proportionally, resulting in similar spike index values across different soil types (0.75 in chernozem and 0.73 in solonetz). The genotype Bankut 1205 had the highest spike index on solonetz (0.82), while the genotype Pesma exhibited the highest spike index on chernozem (0.89). In the season with lower precipitation (2017/2018), a higher spike index was recorded compared to the season with favorable precipitation (2015/2016), indicating plants directed more resources towards grain formation under drought stress. The genotype Pesma had the highest spike index in the 2015/2016 season (0.87), while the genotype Renesansa had the highest spike index in the 2017/2018 season (0.81). Chernozem soil exhibited higher stability, resulting in less variation in spike index values between seasons compared to solonetz soil. Differences in spike index values between different agroecological conditions may result from complex interactions between soil type, season, and plant tolerance to stress factors, with plants showing greater adaptation to drought. This study emphasizes the importance of studying spike index for better understanding wheat adaptability to changing environmental conditions.

AB - Thousand-seed weight (TSW) is one of the traits which related to yield and milling quality of wheat. The aim of this work was to study the variability of the thousand-seed weight of bread wheat varieties grown under different environmental condition. For study were used fifty wheat varieties in a field experiment which design in a randomized block system in three replications on the field in Kraljevo, Serbia during two vegetation season (2015-2017). The seeds of the varieties were sown at the distance of 0.10 m in rows of 1.0 m length among which was the distance of 0.2 m. Sixty plants at the full maturity stage (20 plants replication-1) were harvested and used for analyzing the thousand-seed weight. The analysis of variance was performed by MSTAT C (5.0 version). Similarities among wheat were analyzed by using the hierarchical method of the Euclidean distance. The results showed significant differences in the thousand-seed weight among varieties in both years, estimated by the F-test. On average, in the first vegetation season the least thousand-seed weight (39.14 g) was recorded in the Lepenica variety, while the highest thousand-seed weight (54.66 g) was recorded in the Zadruga variety. In the second vegetation season, thousand-seed weight varied from the lowest (34.57 g) in NS Rana 2 to the highest (50.33 g) in Šumadinka. The similarity was illustrated on a dendogram contained four clusters in the first year and six clusters of varieties in the second year. The prominent cluster contained different numbers and compositions of varieties with the highest degree of similarity. The differences in average of thousand-seed weight were determined by genetic, environmental factor and by interaction genotype/environment.

AB - The number of spikelets per spike is related to the seed yield per spike and total seed yield of wheat plants. The aim of this work is to investigate of spike spikelets number variation in primary spike of wheat grown under different environmental conditions. The 10 wheat genotypes were used for the study. The genotypes were grown in the experiment on a plot size of 1 m2 in three replications in two vegetation seasons (2015-2017). The seeds of at a distance of 0.10 m in rows of 1.0 m length among which was a distance of 0.2 m. At the full maturity stage, the 20 plants replication-1 were used for the analysis of the number of spikelets per primary spike. The analysis of variance was performed by MSTAT C (5.0 version). The results showed significant differences among wheat genotypes in both years, according to number of spikelets per primary spike. On average in the first vegetation season the least number of spikelets per primary spike 19.30 had G-3502-2, while the highest number of spikelets 23.51 had G-3502-1 genotype. In the second vegetation season the number of spikelets primary spike-1 varied from the lowest 19.25 in the G-3502-2 genotype to the highest 25.46 in G-3502-1 genotype. The differences in the average of spikelets spike-1 were determined by genetic, environmental factors, and interaction genotype/environment.

AB - Green leaf lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) is the most widely cultivated plant globally and one of the most consumed vegetables in the human diet. However, lettuce growth can be slow under low-light greenhouse conditions, such as those found in the Balkans winter. With the aim to study the effects of monochromatic blue (MBL) and multispectral white lighting (MWL) on Genesis and Jukebox lettuce cultivars seedlings development, we used light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The cultivation in a greenhouse under only natural lighting served as the control. The research was conducted at the Institute for Vegetable Crops Smederevska Palanka, Serbia. In the phase of three leaves, plants were placed in plant growth chambers (three containers per LED), while three containers were kept in the greenhouse. Plants were cultured in plant growth chambers for 25 days with a 9/15h and 10/14h (day/night) photoperiod, to simulate outdoor conditions. Morphological growth parameters were measured on the 11th and 25th days. Chlorophyll content was measured on the 4th, 11th, 18th, and 25th days after plant removal to plant growth chambers. Based on the results, Genesis lettuce seedlings acclimated to MBL by increasing biomass production and number of leaves after 11 days, while after 25 days, growth parameters and chlorophyll content were significantly increased compared to control. Under MWL, biomass production was lower compared to MBL, and higher compared to greenhouse. Jukebox lettuce seedlings grown under MBL produced higher biomass than those grown under MWL and standard greenhouse conditions. Chlorophyll content was significantly higher under MWL compared to MBL and greenhouse after 25 days. However, plants grown under MBL started to elongate and deform after 10 days. Therefore, we recommend exposing Genesis and Jukebox seedlings to MBL for no more than 10 days to produce quality seedlings. At MWL, plants can be held for 25 days.

AB - In recent years, in order to protect the environment and food safety, intensive work has been done on the development of biological fungicides, nematicides and herbicides, as well as products based on biological agents and medicinal herbs for plant protection. The aim of this research was to evaluate the effect of the application of Bacillus spp. and calendula extract on tomato yield. The experiment was carried out during the 2023 growing season in the field conditions using SP - 109 genotype of tomato, selected at the Institute for Vegetable Crops Smederevska Palanka. Tomato seedlings were produced in a greenhouse and were planted in the field at the end of May. The experiment was laid out in a random block system, with four replications. The number of plants per main plot was 36. The distance between the rows was 50 cm and between the plants in the row 25 cm. Five treatments were applied three times during the vegetable season (T1 - Bacillus spp. isolate 1, T2 - Bacillus spp. isolate 2, T3 - Calendula extract, T4 - Fungicide, T5 - Control). The number of fruits per plant in treatments T1 and T4 was 29. It was statistically significantly higher compared to the number of fruits per plant in treatments T2, T3 and T5 (20, 21, 20). Also, the fresh weight of fruits per plant was significantly higher in treatments T1 and T4 (847.7 and 868.5) compared to treatments T2, T3 and T5 (686.7, 680.4 and 634.4). Results of this investigation indicate that the application of biological agents, specifically selected Bacillus spp. isolate 1 (T1), can have effects comparable to fungicides, as evidenced by the achieved tomato yield. The future research will include investigations of the impact of Bacillus spp. isolates and calendula extract on the nutritional characteristics of tomato fruits.

AB - The aim of the research was to evaluate the influence of the hybrid and the medium for germination testing on indicators of pep- per seed quality. The obtained results should provide an answer as to whether the application of different growing media for testing seed germination can lead to discrepancies between test results in quality indicators for hybrid seeds. The seed quality of three pep- per hybrids: KG 2025 F1, KG 2129 F1 and KG 2032 F1 was tested on two growing media (filter paper and substrate). Statistical analysis of germination energy, total germination, diseased seedlings and dead seeds showed highly significant differences (r<0.01) under the influence of the hybrid factor. The growing media factor also had a highly significant effect on all examined quality indica- tors, except for total germination. A significantly lower number of abnormal and diseased seedlings was found on the filter paper compared to the substrate. A highly negative significant correlation (r = -0.90951, p≤0.001) was recorded only between total germi- nation and diseased seedlings. The obtained results indicate that the application of different media for testing the germination of hy- brid pepper seeds can lead to inconsistencies in the obtained values for all evaluated quality indicators.
Statistička analiza energije klijanja, ukupne klijavosti, bolesnih klijanaca i mrtvog semena pokazala je visoko značajne razlike (р<0,01) pod uticajem faktora hibrid, dok je uticaj hibrida na broj nenormalnih klijanaca izostao.

AB - Sustainable farming is one of the priority goals of the “4 per 1000” concept with regard to the preservation of soil fertility and carbon sequestration. This paper presents a study on the use of a mixture of cover crops of self-grown oats (Avena sativa L.) and sown white mustard (Sinapis alba L.) in organic farming under the agroecological conditions of Serbia. The main objective was to identify sensitive carbon pools (microbial carbon and nitrogen, basal respiration and a number of specific groups of soil microorganisms) in organic farming with and without cover crops. The inclusion of a mixture of white mustard and self-grown oats as a cover crop led to a significantly increased biogenity of the soil compared to a control after only a few years of investigation. The number of microorganisms, soil respiration and microbial biomass carbon were significantly higher in the cover crop treatment compared to the control soil on an organic farm in Serbia. This is the first study in Serbia to investigate the effect of self-grown oats as a cover crop. Further research will incorporate a wider range of variables and factors in order to develop a sustainable and effective site-specific system for organic crop production in Serbia.

AB - Tomato, one of the most produced vegetables in the world, is experiencing continuous global increase in both production and consumption. Fruit quality traits are important for fresh market tomatoes as well as for the processing industry. Despite the growing demand for both fresh and processed tomatoes, consumers are not satisfied with the quality of available fruits. The main objectives of the present work were to determine the physicochemical characteristics [pH, total soluble solids (TSS), total titratable acids (TTA), TSS/TTA ratio, DMC, lycopene, β-carotene, vitamin C, and total phenolic content], as well as the antioxidant activity of 13 different tomato lines, and to identify the most promising ones in terms of fruit taste and quality. Antioxidant activity was determined using the ABTS and DPPH methods with Trolox used as the standard compound. PCA analysis was conducted to identify group patterns. The results of PCA analysis indicated a specific genotypic response in all investigated physicochemical traits. Genotypes 2, 10, and 13 were identified as the best for fresh consumption, as they exhibited the highest levels of compounds crucial for good taste, nutrition, and human health benefits. The most promising genotype related to fruit quality attributes was genotype 10 with the best TSS and TAA content and TSS/TAA ratio, which is important for overall taste perception. On the other hand, genotype 9 showed promise for industrial purposes due to its ideal pH value in the juice and good soluble solid content. High antioxidant activity was characteristic of genotypes 1 and 2, and their consumption as fresh tomatoes can be beneficial to human health. They also should be considered for further evaluation as potentially interesting genotypes for abiotic stress research and selection programs which can lead to the development of both superior fruit quality and stress tolerant genotypes.

AB - Background: In order to reduce the use of synthetic and chemical agents in agriculture, more and more research is turning to
ecological, more environmentally friendly methods. Plant aqueous extracts are products that can be a significant source of various
elements, depending on the type and quality of soil on which the plant species from which the solution is prepared is grown.
Methods: The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of aqueous extracts of different plant species on the yield and quality
parameters of soybean seeds (Glycine max L.). Aqueous extracts of: nettle, nettle+comfrey, banana, banana peel, onion, willow and
soybeans were used foliarly. The 1st foliar treatment plants was done when first flowers opened and the 2nd treatment was done when
first pod reached final length.
Result: The effect of aqueous extracts depends on the agroecological conditions and the analyzed traits. In 2020 the greatest effect
was achieved on the free proline, SOD, Px and CAT. In 2021 the application of certain aqueous extracts had a significant effect on
the yield, gerimination energy, germination percentage and vigour seed.

AB - Genotype by environment interaction (GEI) is a complex problem that complicates the barley selection and breeding process. The knowledge of the relationship between cereal phenology and climatic data is important for understanding GEI and the physiological pathways responsible for the interaction effect. The grain yield of twenty winter barley genotypes in six environments was observed. Factors influencing the variability were analyzed using a linear mixed model. The partial least squares regression (PLSR) model was applied to determine the most relevant environmental variables in certain stages of development that explained GEI effects. Biplot with environmental variables explained 43.7% of the GEI. The barley was generally the most sensitive to the environmental conditions (relative humidity, maximum temperature and its variation, sun hours, and precipitation) during the anthesis and filling stage (May) which caused GEI. Temperature variables did not show significance only in the vegetative phase. Different genotypes responded differently to environmental factors. Genotypes NS-525, NS-589, and J-103 were highlighted as widely adaptable, and Zajeˇcar was a suitable and reliable location for yield testing. The GEI information presented in this paper can be useful in traditional plant breeding and future breeding programs through molecular research of crop developmental genes and examination of physiological processes in two-row barley.
