AB - We examined potential biological activities of two taxa of freshwater algae, Cladophora glomerata and Vaucheria sp., from Serbia. The total phenolic and pigment contents, antioxidant potential, antimicrobial, antibiofilm activities, and cytotoxicity of the ethanol and acetone extracts were evaluated. The extracts were also subjected to Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis. The levels of total phenolic compounds, chlorophylls a and b, and carotenoids varied based on both the algal taxa and the type of extracts. FTIR analysis showed the presence of lipids, unsaturated fatty acids, protein, carbohydrates, and phenols in the algal extracts. The extracts had moderate DPPH radical scavenging activity and lower reducing power compared with ascorbic acid. The antimicrobial activity expressed as minimum inhibitory concentrations ranged from 0.31 mg/mL to 10 mg/mL. The strains of Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus isolated from food samples, as well as S. aureus ATCC 25923, were the most sensitive. For the first time, the antibiofilm activity test revealed 98.7% inhibition of S. aureus biofilm formation. The extracts exhibited cytotoxic effects on choriocarcinoma JAR cells but without selectivity on normal fetal lung fibroblast MRC-5 cells. This is the first report on the biological activities of freshwater macroalgae from Serbia.

AB - In the Balkans, the production of globally cultivated green leaf lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) can be slow due to reduced quality and intensity of solar insolation. Our research aimed to investigate the effects of artificial illumination and the duration of light exposure on the growth and quality of two lettuce genotypes seedlings: Genesis and Jukebox. The research was conducted at the Institute for Vegetable Crops Smederevska Palanka, Serbia. Lettuce seeds were sown in 9 styrofoam containers per genotype, filled with commercial substrate. In the phase of three leaves, plants were placed in plant growth chambers under multispectral white (W) LEDs and monochromatic blue (B) LEDs (three containers per LED and genotype), while three containers were kept in the greenhouse and served as control. The plants were cultured in plant growth chambers for 25 days under a 9h/15h and 10h/14h (light/dark) photoperiod, to simulate outdoor conditions. Morphological growth parameters (number of leaves and plant weight) were measured on the 11th and 25th days. Chlorophyll content was measured on the 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th days. Plants grown under W and B LEDs had a significantly higher number of leaves, plant weight, and chlorophyll content than plants grown in a greenhouse. Using energy-efficient white and blue LED lights in lettuce seedling production during 18-25 days positively impacts seedling quality, and with this seedling production, the plants can achieve high yields and quality.

AB - Tomato, one of the most produced vegetables in the world, is experiencing continuous global increase in both production and consumption. Fruit quality traits are important for fresh market tomatoes as well as for the processing industry. Despite the growing demand for both fresh and processed tomatoes, consumers are not satisfied with the quality of available fruits. The main objectives of the present work were to determine the physicochemical characteristics [pH, total soluble solids (TSS), total titratable acids (TTA), TSS/TTA ratio, DMC, lycopene, β-carotene, vitamin C, and total phenolic content], as well as the antioxidant activity of 13 different tomato lines, and to identify the most promising ones in terms of fruit taste and quality. Antioxidant activity was determined using the ABTS and DPPH methods with Trolox used as the standard compound. PCA analysis was conducted to identify group patterns. The results of PCA analysis indicated a specific genotypic response in all investigated physicochemical traits. Genotypes 2, 10, and 13 were identified as the best for fresh consumption, as they exhibited the highest levels of compounds crucial for good taste, nutrition, and human health benefits. The most promising genotype related to fruit quality attributes was genotype 10 with the best TSS and TAA content and TSS/TAA ratio, which is important for overall taste perception. On the other hand, genotype 9 showed promise for industrial purposes due to its ideal pH value in the juice and good soluble solid content. High antioxidant activity was characteristic of genotypes 1 and 2, and their consumption as fresh tomatoes can be beneficial to human health. They also should be considered for further evaluation as potentially interesting genotypes for abiotic stress research and selection programs which can lead to the development of both superior fruit quality and stress tolerant genotypes.

AB - Colorado potato beetle (CPB) is an extraordinary example of pest resistance to insecticides. It is proved that increased activity
of CPB’s ALiE / carboxylesterase is closely related to resistance to organophosphate insecticides. ALiE activity of diferent
populations was tested, using spectrophotometry. The frequencies of ALiE activity of individual larvae were similar to the
binomial distribution. For more resistant populations to organophosphates, the whole graph is shifted to the area with higher
enzyme activity. Consequently, individuals with lower ALiE activity disappear from the population while individuals with
higher activity appear more frequently. The analysis of single larvae ALiE activity showed a fairly high homogeneity of the
examined populations, except for the population Kaona. Examination of single insect ALiE activity is viable and provides
insight into the population, which is important for further genetic testing.

AB - Background: Sweet corn (Zea mays L. var. saccharata Sturt.) is an important vegetable plant that, together with peas and green beans, is grown industrially and sold frozen (in grain). Due to the specific processing during which the grain is separated from the cob with knives in the technological phase, the cob must be of the correct shape, completely filled with high-quality grain of uniform maturity, which contributes to the quality and yield of the raw material. In Serbia, sweet corn intended for industry is grown in two sowing periods, regular (spring) and late (summer) with mandatory irrigation. The aim of this work was to examine the possibility of growing sweet corn in the agro-ecological conditions of central Serbia (Velika Plana). Materials and Methods: During 2022 and 2023, the currently most popular sweet corn hybrid 'Enterprise' was tested. In both examined years, sowing was done at the beginning of May and July, and sweet corn was grown at a density of 65,000 plants ha-1 (70x22 cm). Tapes with a capacity of 10 lit•H2O•m-1•h were used for drip irrigation. Two irrigation norms (full and reduced 50%) and the regime of natural wetting conditions were applied as a control treatment. In both years of testing, the experiment was set up at the beginning of May and July by sowing the most popular sweet corn hybrid Enterprise F1 in our area. Harvesting and analysis of cobs was done on average 24 days after fertilization. Results: The dates did not have a significant effect on the length of the cob and it was 21 cm on average for both sowing dates. Treatments with watering had a length of cobs significantly greater than the control, while their values were not statistically significantly different. The diameter of the cob was on average 4.89 cm and it was significantly influenced by the time of sowing and the irrigation regime. The total mass of the cob differed significantly according to the dates and had values of 279.4 g for the May sowing, and 306.2 g for the second sowing date. In the variant without irrigation, the value for the weight of the piston was 224.5 g, which is significantly lower than the value from the treatment with watering. The weights of the pistons at reduced and full watering rates did not differ statistically significantly. The grain mass parameter behaved in an identical way, which was 196.6 g on average for all treatments. Conclusion: Taking everything into account, it can be concluded that sweet corn can be successfully grown in Serbian field conditions in both sowing periods, but that the quality of the yield is better with later sowing (later production). Excellent results are achieved by using the drip system for irrigation and at a reduced rate of irrigation.

AB - Background: Broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. italica) is a very popular vegetable species that is characterized by a specific taste and high nutritional value. The flower is used for food, although the other green parts of this plant are also edible. In Serbia, broccoli is produced throughout the year, except for winter. Due to the relatively short growing season, it is a good pre-crop, as well as a subsequent crop. During production, the utilization of applied nutrients is questionable, and therefore their effect on production. Materials and Methods: During these studies, the influence of micro granulated starter fertilizer (Super Start NP 10:35 +2% MgO + 5% S +2% Zn, Elixir Zorka, Serbia) on the production characteristics of broccoli was investigated, with the aim of finding the optimal dose its applications. Fertilizer was added to the soil along both sides of the planted plants at a distance of about 10 cm from the roots. In addition to the control in which no starter fertilizer was applied, there were 5 more treatments with doses from 15 to 35 kg/ha. Broccoli variety Parthenon F1 (Sakata Seed) was grown at a density of 28,800 plants/ha. Other agro technical measures were standard (watering, protection). Results: Inflorescences were harvested at technological maturity when they reached the appropriate size. The measured values for the width, height and mass of the inflorescence were significantly higher in the varieties with the highest doses of starter fertilizer. The yield behaved in the same way. The width of the inflorescence ranged from 16.37 to 20.63 cm, the height from 12.52 to 14.79 cm, the mass of the inflorescence from 448.7 to 661.4 g, while the yield had values from 10.68 to 15.74 t/ha. Conclusion: For all examined parameters, the values obtained at the highest doses of starting fertilization (30 and 35 kg/ha) did not differ statistically significantly. Based on this, it can be concluded that the dose of applied starter fertilizer of 30 kg/ha is optimal in the production of broccoli.

AB - This study aimed to ascertain the differences in the nutritional composition of maize grains by analysing their lipid, protein, fatty acid, triacylglycerol, and sugar content before and after undergoing an accelerated aging (AA) test. Additionally, phytochemicals (total pigments, phenolics and flavonoids), as well as antioxidant potential of maize grains were evaluated through ABTS•+ scavenging capacity and ferric reducing power (FRP) assays. Maize was cultivated in Serbia during the 2017 season, employing two growing systems (conventional and organic). Although minimal differences were observed in protein and lipid content, the grains proved to be an excellent source of polyunsaturated fatty acids and triacylglycerols with ECN44 fraction being predominant. The total soluble sugar content was low, while starch content was significantly higher. HPLC analysis confirmed a considerably higher prevalence of non-reducing disaccharides compared to reducingdisaccharides. Maize grains emerged as a substantial source of chlorophyll a (0.53-4.38 μg/g DW), phenolics (1498.9-1931.3 mg FAE/kg DW), and flavonoids (85.7-381.9 mg QE/kg DW). All tested extracts exhibited satisfactory abilities to neutralize free ABTS•+. The FRP assay revealed a significantly higher ability to reduce Fe3+-ions in conventionally produced grains. According to the Blunt-Altman test, all analysed parameters showed considerable similarity, except for chlorophylls a and b. Principal component analysis (PCA) revealed that grains exposed to the AA test were mainly separated based on chlorophyll a, C20:0, C18:1n-9, MUFA, carotenoids, lipids content. Conversely, conventional untreated grains were primarily distinguished by their pentose, hexose and chlorophyll b content, while in the case of organic samples, disaccharides (both reducing and non-reducing) and soluble sugars were the main differentiating factors. The present preliminary study can serve as foundational research for future investigations aimed at comprehending alterations in nutrients and phytochemicals induced by accelerated aging tests. However, it should be supplemented and expanded upon by subsequent studies in the future.

AB - Sustainable farming is one of the priority goals of the “4 per 1000” concept with regard to the preservation of soil fertility and carbon sequestration. This paper presents a study on the use of a mixture of cover crops of self-grown oats (Avena sativa L.) and sown white mustard (Sinapis alba L.) in organic farming under the agroecological conditions of Serbia. The main objective was to identify sensitive carbon pools (microbial carbon and nitrogen, basal respiration and a number of specific groups of soil microorganisms) in organic farming with and without cover crops. The inclusion of a mixture of white mustard and self-grown oats as a cover crop led to a significantly increased biogenity of the soil compared to a control after only a few years of investigation. The number of microorganisms, soil respiration and microbial biomass carbon were significantly higher in the cover crop treatment compared to the control soil on an organic farm in Serbia. This is the first study in Serbia to investigate the effect of self-grown oats as a cover crop. Further research will incorporate a wider range of variables and factors in order to develop a sustainable and effective site-specific system for organic crop production in Serbia.

AB - Pepper (Capsicum annuum L.), as one of the most important vegetable crops, requires continuous work on the selection of new varieties and hybrids with greater genetic potential for fertility, and the introduction of new cultivation technologies, all to satisfy human needs. In the f irst year of research, after crossing two parental components based on sterile lines, hybrid seeds of experimental hybrids were produced. A comparative experiment was set up in the greenhouse of the Institute for Vegetable Crops Smederevska Palanka in 2023 to create new pepper hybrids, which are characterized by fruits for different purposes. Of the seven experimental hybrid combinations, one is selected (LPK027 x HM6) for its potential morphological features (fruit weight and number of fruits per plant) as the main components of yield and high content of dry matter and was reported to the Commission for the Recognition of New Varieties in 2024 under the name Katja F1 .

AB - In the Balkans, the production of globally cultivated green leaf lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) can
be slow due to reduced quality and intensity of solar insolation. Our research aimed to investigate
the effects of artificial illumination and the duration of light exposure on the growth and quality
of two lettuce genotypes seedlings: Genesis and Jukebox. The research was conducted at the
Institute for Vegetable Crops Smederevska Palanka, Serbia. Lettuce seeds were sown in 9 styrofoam
containers per genotype, filled with commercial substrate. In the phase of three leaves, plants
were placed in plant growth chambers under multispectral white (W) LEDs and monochromatic
blue (B) LEDs (three containers per LED and genotype), while three containers were kept in
the greenhouse and served as control. The plants were cultured in plant growth chambers for
25 days under a 9h/15h and 10h/14h (light/dark) photoperiod, to simulate outdoor conditions.
Morphological growth parameters (number of leaves and plant weight) were measured on the 11th
and 25th days. Chlorophyll content was measured on the 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th days. Plants grown
under W and B LEDs had a significantly higher number of leaves, plant weight, and chlorophyll
content than plants grown in a greenhouse. Using energy-efficient white and blue LED lights in
lettuce seedling production during 18-25 days positively impacts seedling quality, and with this
seedling production, the plants can achieve high yields and quality.
kvaliteta i intenziteta sunčeve insolacije.
salate: Genesis i Jukebox.
i 25. dana.
gajenim u stakleniku. Upotreba energetski efikasnih belih i plavih LED svetiljki u proizvodnji
rasada zelene salate tokom 18-25 dana pozitivno utiče na kvalitet rasada, a biljke dobijene iz
ovakvog rasada mogu da ostvare visoke prinose i kvalitet.

AB - Soybean as a member of the legume family has a high economic value, thanks to the high protein and oil content of the seed. In addition, its importance is evidenced by its breeding potential and symbiosis with nodulating bacteria, which facilitates production in increasingly extreme climatic conditions and degraded soil conditions. Considering the need to search for optimal solutions in the production of this legume, in order to achieve high yields and grain quality, research was conducted to determine the effect of applying a microbiological preparation containing effective microorganisms on the yield, and protein and oil content of soybeans. Research was conducted in the period 2016–2018 (factor A), on 6 different soybean genotypes belonging to different ripening groups: 0 (Galina and Valjevka), I (Sava and NS Apolo) and II (Rubin and NS Zita) (factor B), and under fertilization treatments: F0 – control, F1 – NPK fertilizer, and F2 – NPK + microbiological preparation (incorporated into the soil and two foliar treatments) (factor C). It was shown that the application of NPK fertilization treatment in combination with effective microorganisms was the most beneficial for all investigated parameters, with a high statistical significance. This treatment increased yield by 15.67%, protein content by 0.34% and oil content by 0.47% compared to the control. The additional importance of this research is the simultaneous positive impact on protein and oil contents in soybeans, given that they are generally negatively correlated.

AB - The aim of the research was to evaluate the influence of the hybrid and the medium for germination testing on indicators of pep- per seed quality. The obtained results should provide an answer as to whether the application of different growing media for testing seed germination can lead to discrepancies between test results in quality indicators for hybrid seeds. The seed quality of three pep- per hybrids: KG 2025 F1, KG 2129 F1 and KG 2032 F1 was tested on two growing media (filter paper and substrate). Statistical analysis of germination energy, total germination, diseased seedlings and dead seeds showed highly significant differences (r<0.01) under the influence of the hybrid factor. The growing media factor also had a highly significant effect on all examined quality indica- tors, except for total germination. A significantly lower number of abnormal and diseased seedlings was found on the filter paper compared to the substrate. A highly negative significant correlation (r = -0.90951, p≤0.001) was recorded only between total germi- nation and diseased seedlings. The obtained results indicate that the application of different media for testing the germination of hy- brid pepper seeds can lead to inconsistencies in the obtained values for all evaluated quality indicators.
Statistička analiza energije klijanja, ukupne klijavosti, bolesnih klijanaca i mrtvog semena pokazala je visoko značajne razlike (р<0,01) pod uticajem faktora hibrid, dok je uticaj hibrida na broj nenormalnih klijanaca izostao.

AB - Background: In order to reduce the use of synthetic and chemical agents in agriculture, more and more research is turning to
ecological, more environmentally friendly methods. Plant aqueous extracts are products that can be a significant source of various
elements, depending on the type and quality of soil on which the plant species from which the solution is prepared is grown.
Methods: The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of aqueous extracts of different plant species on the yield and quality
parameters of soybean seeds (Glycine max L.). Aqueous extracts of: nettle, nettle+comfrey, banana, banana peel, onion, willow and
soybeans were used foliarly. The 1st foliar treatment plants was done when first flowers opened and the 2nd treatment was done when
first pod reached final length.
Result: The effect of aqueous extracts depends on the agroecological conditions and the analyzed traits. In 2020 the greatest effect
was achieved on the free proline, SOD, Px and CAT. In 2021 the application of certain aqueous extracts had a significant effect on
the yield, gerimination energy, germination percentage and vigour seed.

AB - Seed protein content is important component of technological quality of flour, dough and wheat end products. Proteins are genetically determined and its content varied in depending of environmental factors and interaction of genotypes/environment. The aim of this work is analysis of seed protein content and dry gluten content in wheat grown under different environmental conditions. In this research were analyzed 10 genetically divergent wheat genotypes (G-3512, G-3530, G-3535-1, G3520, G-3513, G-3524, G-3535, G-3536-1, G-3549, G-3553) which grown in field condition in two vegetation season (2015/16 and 2016/17) which are differed in wether condition (temperature and precipitation). The protein content and dry gluten content variate in analyzed wheat genotypes and were different in both years of investigation. In the first vegetation season, the dry gluten content varied between 23.28% (G-3549) and 29.04% (G-3530), while in the second, all genotypes had higher gluten content, which variate in the range from 25.36% (G-3549) to 32.56% (G-3530). The seed protein content varied from the lowest (11.40%) in genotype G-3520 to the highest 14.10% in G-3535 in the first vegetation season. In the second vegetation season seed protein content was higher than in the first vegetation season in all genotypes, and found in the range from 12.50% in genotype G-3520 to the highest 15.20% in genotype G-3535. Different value of protein content and gluten content in genotypes within the seasons and between vegetation seasons indicate genotype differences in response of genotype to changed environmental conditions.

AB - Bradyrhizobium japonicum bacteria on the intensity of nodulation during nine phenophases (R1-R7) in relation to the isoflavone content in soybean seeds. Nine domestic soybean varieties were sown in three replicates, with Bradyrhizobium japonicum inoculated and non-inoculated seeds. The different morphological characteristics of nodules, the number and mass of nodules were studied during plants’ ontogenesis. The content of individual isoflavones in the sowing seed material was determined using high performance liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS). The most abundant isoflavone was acetylgenistin in the variety Galeb (2741.4 μg/g), and the highest content of all isoflavones was recorded in the variety Gorštak (8117.7 μg/g). The variety Sava of the inoculated treatment exhibited the highest average values of the nodule mass (21.1 mg) and the highest number of nodules (23.3) in the phenophase, in which 10% of pods reached full length (R4). The average values of mass and number of nodules were calculated for the entire vegetation period, being higher in the inoculated treatment. There was no positive correlation between the content of isoflavones in seeds and the number and mass of nodules. The impact of quantity of isoflavone on nodulation intensity in soybeans was not significant,, which could be related to already saturated soil with nitrogen-fixing bacteria.

AB - Cabbage is a plant of low nutritional value with a high water content and a low content of dry matter and carbohydrates, predominantly sugars. In directing the breeding program of cabbage to increase its nutritional value, the Institute for Vegetable Crops in S. Palanka created a large number of lines from the population of Izpscc. These lines are characterized by a high sugar content ranging from 6.1% to 9.6%, compared to the world average of 3.8% to 4.2%. The selection process began with the method of individual selection from the population and continued with the Pedigree method. The basic selection criteria were: erectophilic rosette, leaves with long petioles that facilitate phototropism, internal stem shorter than 50% of the head height, total sugar content higher than 7.5%, well-compacted head, and head weight over 1.6 kg. To select the final genotype, a multi-year study on sugar stability was conducted, using AMMI analysis as a statistical method to assess the significance of genotype and environmental stability. The selection process was supported by the project "New variety of cabbage with increased yield and content of total sugars" funded by the Innovation Activity Fund, 2017 - 2018. The super sweet cabbage Zahar SP was recognized on the EU variety list on April 7, 2020, and was listed in the Republic of Serbia on July 28, 2020. International cooperation was achieved with the help of the Fund for Innovation Activities in collaboration with Syngenta. This collaboration focused on selecting supersweet cabbage hybrids resistant to biotic and abiotic stress. Numerous hybrids were developed by hybridizing DH lines of supersweet cabbage from the Institute for Vegetable Crops with stress-resistant CMS lines. Four hybrids were selected to begin the process of recognition in the EU variety list, with market realization expected from 2027. Economic teams will manage the commercialization plans and strategies for the global market.

AB - One of the major challenges in the production of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) seedlings is to get quality seedlings, which can be difficult in conditions of low light. This paper aimed to study the effects of multispectral white and monochromatic blue light- emitting diodes (LEDs) lighting on development and chlorophyll content in Viola curly purple-leaf lettuce cultivar seedlings, compared to standard cultivation in greenhouses. The research was performed in December 2023/January-February 2024 at the Institute for Vegetable Crops Smederevska Palanka, Serbia. Seeds were sowed in containers filled with commercial substrate. In the phase of three leaves, six containers with plants were placed in phytochambers (three containers per LED), while three containers were kept in the greenhouse for control. Plants were cultured in phytochambers for 25 days with a 9/15 h and 10/14 h (light/dark) photoperiod, to simulate outdoor conditions. Morphological growth parameters were measured after 11 and 25 days, while chlorophyll content was measured after 4, 11, 18 and 25 days. Results of this study show that plants' morphological parameters and chlorophyll content were significantly influenced by LEDs. During lettuce cultivation in phytochambers, it is necessary to be cautious regarding lighting duration. Our results indicate that extended exposure to LEDs negatively affects Viola lettuce seedlings' development, leading to plant elongation and deformation. Such seedlings are not able to grow into healthy and quality plants. Additionally, extended artificial illumination affects one of the most advantageous traits of the Viola lettuce cultivar - purple leaves. Exposure to LEDs for more than 10 days leads to the loss of anthocyanin, and accordingly purple color in leaves. In order to produce quality seedlings, we recommend exposing Viola lettuce cultivar seedlings to monochromatic blue and multispectral white LEDs only for four and 10 days, respectively.

AB - The results are presented for black and white dairy cows with dominant participation of the Holstein genes on two commercial farms of Al Dahra Corporation (former PKB) with different husbandry systems. The method of description was used as a method in this research. This method shows the number of dairy cattle on Al Dahra’s farms in 2021/22/23. years, different housing systems, certain characteristics of milk yield and reproduction. The results are presented in the form of mean values of the observed parameters for each examined year. In the free housing system, during the three years of observation, a significantly higher number of dairy cows were raised compared to the bounded housing system (+2420; +1900 and +1825, respectively). The production and reproduction results were significantly better in dairy cows in the freestall system compared to the bounded housing system. A higher daily milk yield per head (29.0) was achieved compared to the bounded system (27.2), which resulted in a higher annual milk production - 6,889 l compared to 5,278 l., but the quality of the milk (3.6% milk fat and 3.25% protein) was the same for both presented housing systems. The duration of the service period of 127 days in the free system is significantly shorter than the duration of the service period in the bounded system (171 days). The free housing system also led to a lower insemination index for both cows (2.7) and heifers (1.9) compared to the other way of housing (3.8 for cows and 2.4 for heifers). In both Al Dahras farms, the age of dairy cow at the moment of excluding from production herd is on average 5 years for both husbandry systems, which significantly reduces the profitability of production. Housing system is a factor that strongly affects the welfare quality of dairy cows. In the management system of Al Dahra there is no monitoring, but it could be pointed out that the available investigations of housing system did not bring complete answer on all questions. However, based on this research we can recommend a free housing system with positive influence on the welfare of the animals.
